China's navy to be largest in world by 2035 as Beijing steps up modernization efforts | World | New
Michael McDevitt, a retired U.S. Navy Rear Admiral, said China's military might is expanding and warns that Beijing's naval forces will soon overtake the United States. In the February issue of Proceedings, a journal run by the United States Naval Institute, the expert predicted that China will have a "world class" navy within 15 years. Based on ongoing modernization efforts, McDevitt predicts that Beijing will bring a significant number of new warships into service in the years to come, exceeding the current capabilities of the United States.
The expert points out that the United States currently has the most powerful navy in the world, based on the number of warships in blue water – a maritime force capable of operating in it. worldwide, mainly across the oceans.
Currently, the United States has 236 such ships, with China lagging behind 131, reports McDevitt.
China far exceeds other countries, with Russia with a total of 73 warships in blue water, followed by Japan with 44, the United Kingdom with 39, India with 33 and France with 36 .
But the expert predicts that the number of warships in Beijing will reach 270 by 2035.
He bases the figure on plans launched by China over the past decade.
McDevitt wrote: "In this short decade and a half, China has launched and / or put into service 131 ships capable of carrying blue waters and built about 144 other warships intended for operations only in the seas close to China, for a total of about 275 new warships.
"During many of these years, the most modern shipyards in China were not yet in full production, so it is not unreasonable to expect that over the next 15 years, it could put into service or launch 140 more vessels in blue waters to increase its capacity on the high seas and to replace some of the current deep-sea vessels commissioned between 2005 and 2010.
"In summary, I predict that the blue water capable planes of the Navy [People's Liberation Army] in 2035 will have about 270 warships."

He added: "In any measure, this navy should be considered" world class "."
Such a result would materialize the "Chinese dream" of Chinese President Xi Jinping – which includes projects of "strong armed forces".
He wants the Chinese armed forces to be "world class" by 2050.
China's military spending increased by 83% in real terms between 2009 and 2018, in an attempt to achieve this goal.
