Indonesia confirms first cases of new coronavirus

Indonesian President Joko Widodo announced today (2) the first two positive cases of coronavirus Covid-19 in the country, explaining that these are citizens who have been in contact with Japanese visitors to Indonesia.

Quoted by the newspaperKompas, Joko Widodo said the 64-year-old woman and her 31-year-old daughter, now hospitalized, had contact with two Japanese women who were screened in Malaysia, where it was discovered that they had the virus.

"It has been checked and this morning I received a report from the Minister of Health, that this mother and daughter have tested positive for the virus," said Jokowi, as the president is popularly known.

These are the first two positive cases in the fourth most populous country in the world and are in addition to the cases of Indonesians who had previously tested positive for the virus in other countries.

An Indonesian citizen living in Singapore was the first to contract the virus and was reportedly infected by tourists who visited the store where she worked.

Global emergency

The Covid-19 epidemic, which originated in China as of December 2019, it had infected more than 86,000 people in 53 countries on five continents, of which around 3,000 people died.

In Europe, Italy is the country hardest hit by the epidemic, with 17 dead and 605 infected.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has increased the threat level caused by the new coronavirus to a very high level, which can cause respiratory infections such as pneumonia.
