Coronavirus strikes the 4th most populous country in the world

As the United States reported its second coronavirus death, more and more countries reported its first cases, including Indonesia, the fourth most populous country in the world. Joko Widodo, the country of the President of the People of 272 million, says that two women were hospitalized in Jakarta after being infected by a Japanese citizen who has now left the country, guardian reports. Authorities said on Monday that there were 4,335 cases detected in South Korea and at least 26 deaths.
- The EU increases its alert level. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on Monday that the European Union had raised the risk of coronavirus from "moderate" to "high", the BBC reports. Health officials say the coronavirus has now spread to at least 18 European Union countries, with more than 2,100 confirmed cases and nearly 40 deaths, most of them in Italy.
- Senior official dies in Iran. Iranian authorities confirmed on Monday that Mohammad Mirmohammadi, a 71-year-old council member who advises the country's supreme chief, has died of coronavirus, reports the AP. Iran has now reported 66 deaths and 1,501 confirmed cases, but based on the number of deaths, experts estimate that there are many more infections.
- Volatile global markets. After major losses last week, global markets were "volatile" on Monday, as investors reacted to both suggestions that central banks would intervene to ease the economic pain and forecasts that global growth would be hit hard if the the outbreak continues to spread, the New york times reports.
- Cases jump in France. Authorities in France said on Sunday that the number of confirmed cases had increased from 100 to 130, with two deaths. Authorities said the epidemic is now in "stage 2" of a three-step process and have promised a "very responsive, pragmatic and reactive attitude".
- New cases in India. For the first time in weeks, India reported new coronavirus infections on Monday, bringing the total to five, the Washington Post reports. One patient had traveled to Italy and the other to Dubai, officials said. India now controls travelers from more than a dozen countries.
