Turkey threatens new offensive in Syria, denounces Russian airstrikes

Turkey threatens new offensive in Syria, denounces Russian airstrikes

Turkey is ready to lead a new military offensive in northern Syria unless Kurdish rebels are not evacuated from areas along Turkey’s border with Syria, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan threatened on Wednesday. addressing legislators in parliament.

“If all terrorists are not expelled as we have been promised, I repeat once again that we have a legitimate reason to intervene at any time. We feel the need, ”Erdogan said with reference to the Kurdish fighters.

Erdogan made his remarks just days after two Kurdish fighters infiltrated Turkey from the Syrian border. One of the activists was killed in a shootout with the police; the other detonated a suicide bombing following a police chase in the border town of Hatay.

Erdogan has made it clear that Turkey is determined to protect its border region. He also added that a recent Russian airstrike that targeted a military training camp of Failaq al-Sham, one of the largest Turkish-backed armed militias in the region, was an indication that Moscow was not seeking lasting peace in the region.

The Russian airstrike took place in Jabal al-Dweila near Idlib. At least 35 died and 50 others were injured during the strike. Training camp was preparing to graduate a new class of fighters when he was hit.

The airstrike was seen by many Middle Eastern analysts as a message from Moscow to Ankara. President Putin is upset that the Turks have raised the bar in Nagorno-Karabakh by transporting an influx of Syrian mercenaries to fight the Armenian forces.

Relations between Russia and Turkey are at a very low point despite the recent sale of the S-400 air defense system by Moscow to Ankara. The two countries are vying for increased presence and influence in the region, mainly using indirect forces. TThey support opposing camps in Syria, Libya and during the recent explosion between Armenia and Azerbaijan in the Nagorno-Karabakh region in the Caucasus. Russia sees the Caucasus as its backyard.

The Turks sent thousands of Syrian mercenaries to fight on behalf of the UN-recognized Government of National Accord (GNA) in Tripoli. The GNA is fighting against the Russian-backed forces of the Libyan National Army (LNA) under the command of General Khalifa Haftar.

In Syria, the Russians have long supported the regime of President Bashar Assad while the Turkish government supports several opposition groups. The National Liberation Front alliance is the largest of the armed groups supported by Turkey. It comprises 11 factions of the Free Syrian Army, all supported by Ankara.

The National Liberation Front has excluded Hayet Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), a former al-Qaeda affiliate previously known as Jabhat al-Nusra. HTS is considered a terrorist organization by the US State Department. It has moved away from al-Qaeda’s goals of establishing a world caliphate. Instead, HTS is locally focused. Its main objective is the establishment of an Islamic regime in Syria by “overthrowing the criminal [Assad] regime and expel Iranian militias. HTS currently controls large swathes of northwestern Syria. It has around 12,000 to 15,000 combatants.

HTS ‘attempts to take control of Idlib had given the Turks a pretext to intervene.

Since 2016, the Turkish military has carried out three major incursions into northeastern Syria. The aim is to expel Kurdish and ISIS fighters from the border area. A year ago, the Turks led an operation to drive Kurdish rebels out of the border area and create a “safe zone” where they hoped to resettle the refugees.

Turkey is currently hosting nearly 3.6 million Syrian refugees. While initially the Turkish population accepted them with joy, the majority of Turks now want the Syrians to return to their homeland. The economic turmoil facing Turkey contributes to this sentiment.

Due to the combined Russian-Syrian offensive in Idlib, nearly a million more Syrians have been displaced. The Turks were reluctant to allow them to enter Turkey and instead created makeshift camps for them. Conditions in the camps are bad.

The Russians and Turks had agreed to a ceasefire in Idlib and to conduct joint patrols along the M4 motorway, but the deal appears to be breaking down.
