Indonesian President orders residents to wear masks
JAKARTA
Indonesian President Joko Widodo has ordered government officials to speed up the production of masks to stem the spread of the new coronavirus or COVID-19.
“All residents who leave their homes are required to wear masks,” the president said at a meeting on Monday.
The decision was made on the recommendation of the World Health Organization (WHO).
“Previously, the WHO said that only sick people were required to wear masks, but now everyone is obliged to wear it, whether you are sick or in good health,” added Widodo.
Widodo also called for speeding up the production and distribution of personal protective equipment for medical personnel.
“The surgical masks and N95 are reserved for health workers. Meanwhile, non-health workers can wear cloth masks, ”official spokesman Achmad Yurianto said on Sunday.
Yurianto, who has been tasked with taking stock of COVID-19 issues, said that a cloth mask can be used for up to four hours.
Indonesia reported 11 new deaths and 218 new cases of coronavirus on Monday, bringing the total number of deaths to 209 and the total number of confirmed cases of the global pandemic to 2,491.
Since its appearance in Wuhan, China, last December, the new coronavirus has spread to at least 183 countries and regions, according to figures compiled by the American Johns Hopkins University.
Data shows that more than 1.2 million cases have been reported worldwide, with a global death toll of almost 70,000 and more than 263,000 healings.
