Donald Trump’s team calls for Georgia recount, as judge rejects offer to stop certification of votes in Pennsylvania

US President Donald Trump’s legal team has said it has called for another recount of the votes in Georgia, where the results show President-elect Joe Biden won the state.

Key points: Mr Trump’s legal team filed a petition calling for a recount of presidential votes in Georgia Mr Trump criticized the manual audit carried out in the state A Pennsylvanian judge said the Trump campaign case to reject postal votes was “unfounded”

The move follows a Pennsylvania federal judge who dismissed a lawsuit filed by the president’s team seeking to reject millions of mail-order votes in Pennsylvania.

Georgia certified the state’s election results on Friday. They caused Mr. Biden to beat Mr. Trump by 12,670 votes out of about 5 million votes, a 0.25% margin.

State law allows a candidate to request a recount if the margin is less than 0.5%.

“We strive to ensure that all aspects of Georgia state law and the US Constitution are followed so that every legal vote is counted,” Mr. Trump’s legal team said in a statement confirming that ‘she had filed a petition for a recount.

“President Trump and his campaign continue to insist on an honest recount in Georgia, which must include matching signatures and other vital guarantees.

“Without a match of signatures, this recount would be a sham and would again allow illegal votes to be counted.”

The recount would be done using scanners that would read and tabulate the votes.

Election officials have already done a full manual recount of all votes cast in the presidential race.

But this stemmed from a mandatory audit requirement and was not considered an official recount under the law.

Georgia state law requires a race to be manually controlled to ensure the machines counted the ballots accurately, and the Republican Secretary of State of Georgia selected the presidential race.

Mr Trump criticized the audit, calling it a “joke” in a Twitter post claiming without evidence that “thousands of fraudulent votes were found.”

Twitter reported the post as containing disputed information.

Votes that had not previously been counted were found in several counties during the audit, which required recertification of election results in those counties prior to state certification of the results.

Trump’s Pennsylvania lawsuit dismissed

Meanwhile, Mr. Trump’s campaign has received another heavy blow in its effort to undo its November 3 election defeat to Democratic President-elect Biden.

A lawsuit to cast millions of postal votes in Pennsylvania has been dismissed.

U.S. District Court Judge Matthew Brann ruled that Mr. Trump’s campaign failed to demonstrate widespread voter fraud in the election.

“This tribunal was presented with strained legal arguments without merit and speculative accusations,” Judge Brann wrote.

The gist of the American elections

He added that he “does not have the power to take away the right to vote even from one person, let alone from millions of citizens.”

“In the United States of America, that cannot justify the denial of the right to vote of just one voter, let alone all voters in its sixth most populous state,” the ruling reads.

“Our people, our laws and our institutions demand more.”

The trial, led by Mr. Trump’s personal attorney Rudy Giuliani, was aimed at preventing officials from certifying Mr. Biden’s victory in the state, arguing that some counties had wrongly allowed voters to correct mistakes on their postal ballots.

Mr. Giuliani did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

“I have said to anyone who will listen, these lawsuits are without merit,” Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro said on Twitter after the ruling.

Ongoing challenges in other states

The lawsuit is one of dozens of lawsuits filed by Mr. Trump and his Republican allies in the aftermath of the election.

They are also seeking to invalidate or modify the results through recounts and direct pressure on politicians in several states.

The campaign did not provide evidence for its allegations of widespread and coordinated electoral fraud.

In Michigan, Republicans on Saturday asked state officials to wait to certify Mr. Biden’s victory for 14 days to allow for an audit of the ballots in Wayne County, which includes the predominantly black city of Detroit.

Mr. Biden won 154,000 more votes than Mr. Trump in Michigan.

This effort faces long chances.

A spokesperson for Michigan’s top electoral authority said state law does not allow audits before the vote is certified, which was due to take place on Monday.

The allegations of widespread fraud were found to be baseless, the spokesperson said.

Two senior Republican politicians from Michigan, who came to Washington at Mr. Trump’s request, said after meeting with him on Friday that they had no information that would change the state’s election result.

In Wisconsin, an official said ill-trained observers for the Trump campaign were slowing a partial recount by challenging every ballot and raising other objections.

“The observers are disruptive. They ask question after question, telling the tabulators to stop, to stop what they are doing and it is irrelevant, it is not acceptable,” said the county clerk of Milwaukee George Christianson to reporters.

A manual recount and an audit in Georgia confirmed on Friday that Mr Biden was the winner in Southern State, the first Democratic presidential candidate to win Georgia in nearly three decades.

The Trump campaign now has two working days to request a recount in Georgia.

Mr Trump’s legal team also said they were planning a trial in the state, but did not provide details.
