Imran worries about surge in COVID cases

Islamabad, November 22 (UNI) Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan on Sunday expressed concern over the surge in coronavirus cases across the country, urging opposition parties to avoid public gatherings to stop the pandemic.

According to the latest official data released on Sunday morning, a total of 2,665 new cases of COVID-19 have been recorded with 59 deaths in Pakistan in the past 24 hours.

The death toll in the country has now reached 7,662 while active cases are now 36,683, according to figures released by the Ministry of Health.

“The data from the second peak of COVID-19 in Pakistan is concerning: increase in the number of Covid patients on ventilators in the last 15 days,” the Prime Minister tweeted.

“All over the world there is a second peak and full lockdowns in most countries,” he said, adding that the rallying of opposition parties would endanger lives and livelihoods.

“If cases continue to increase at the rate that we are seeing, we will be forced to lock in completely,” Khan said in a series of tweets.

The prime minister said he did not want to re-impose the lockdown which would hurt the country’s economy with signs of recovery.

Earlier, the Prime Minister announced the cancellation of the government’s plan to hold public gatherings due to the second wave of COVID-19 in Pakistan.
