Sindh Governor Meets New IGP Mushtaq Mehar To "Discuss Role Of Police" | Pakistan

KARACHI: Sindh governor Imran Ismail on Wednesday met with the new Inspector General of the Police (IGP), Mushtaq Mehar.

The two men discussed peace and stability in Sindh and the role of the police, among other topics, said Ismail spokesman.

The governor said improvements should be made to the province's police system.

Ismail also ordered Mehar to act without discrimination in order to eradicate the crime in Sindh. The top priority of the federal government was to ensure lasting peace and stability, he added.

The governor further noted that the implementation of development projects was directly linked to peace and stability.

Kaleem Imam takes charge of IGNH & MP

On the other hand, former Dr Syed Kaleem Imam of the Sindh PGI took up his new post as Inspector General of the National Highways and Motorways Police (NH&MP) earlier during the day.

Subsequently, Dr. Imam met with Minister of Communications Murad Saeed in Islamabad where the two had a detailed discussion on professional and bilateral issues.

"I hope Kaleem Imam will introduce new dimensions to highway policing," said Saeed, expressing his best wishes to the new IG NH&MP.

Tensions of several weeks

Mehar's appointment as Sindh's PGI came after weeks of tensions between the provincial and federal governments, as well as the internal struggles of some police officers.

On January 15, the provincial cabinet asked the federal government to fire former PGI Dr. Kaleem Imam for unsatisfactory performance. A few days later, Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah made an official request to Prime Minister Imran Khan about this.

Then, on January 27, the government led by the PTI reportedly reached a consensus with provincial leaders on the appointment of Mehar, but in February, Sindh's Minister of Information, Saeed Ghani, alleged that the Center was trying to impose his decision.

"The provincial government would never accept such a measure," said Ghani, adding that Prime Minister Imran Khan had agreed during a meeting in December 2019 with CM Shah to replace Dr Imam in office.

I hope that Mehar "dismisses political associations"

After Mehar's appointment as the province's best cop, SAPM Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan said the decision was "taken after consultations with the provincial governor and the request of the government of Sindh".

"We hope that the new IG will dismiss all political associations to work to ensure that peace prevails and that crime is eradicated in Sindh," added the Prime Minister's aide.
