NGO could ask for Jokowi's help on the disappearance of Ruth Sitepu

KUALA LUMPUR: An Indonesian NGO against enforced disappearances has not ruled out that its president, Joko Widodo or Jokowi, is putting pressure on Putrajaya for the disappearance of Ruth Sitepu.

Ruth, from Nambiki, north of Sumatra, and her husband, Joshua Hilmy, a Malaysian Muslim who converted to Christianity, have been missing for more than three years. They were last seen on November 30, 2016.

The Commission for the Missing and Victims of Violence (KontraS) said it had already raised the issue with their foreign ministry.

We could (approach Widodo) after that but we are awaiting progress (on this matter), out of respect for the Malaysian authorities.

After the investigation, if there is no progress, we will consider raising it with the president, KontraS coordinator Yati Andriyani told reporters after the investigation Suhakam on the disappearance of Ruth and Joshuas here.

Andriyani went on to say that the investigation had uncovered numerous clues and hoped that the Malaysian and Indonesian authorities would follow up on this information, rather than relying solely on the testimony of those linked to the victims.

The two nations, she said, must also recognize that they have hardly resolved this matter.

It has been going on for three years and there is no progress in this case, she said.

Andriyani said his NGO has been lobbying the Indonesian authorities since the Ruths family approached them.

According to her, whatever the history of the case and the political situation, the authorities have an obligation to resolve it.
