Haryana’s Deputy Chief Minister Dushyant Chautala met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday, amid continued farmers’ protest against the three central laws. The Supreme Court on Tuesday suspended the implementation of the laws, but farmers hardened their stance by reiterating that they want the laws to be repealed.

The higher court has formed a committee to resolve the deadlock over the three laws, but protesters said they would not listen because all four panelists are in favor of the government.

In addition to the three laws, which were passed in September last year, Chautala also held talks on textile hubs, airports, east-west corridors and railroads, the ANI news agency reported.

The meeting with Prime Minister Modi comes a day after Chautala met Interior Minister Amit Shah with Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar.

After Tuesday’s meeting, Khattar said the political situation in the state was correct and dismissed claims that his government was weak. The speculations of the opposition and the media are baseless. Our government is strong and will complete its mandate, he said.

“I think the government (in the state) is going strong. As far as farmers are concerned, every problem has been discussed. Hopefully the Supreme Court will resolve it,” Chautala said after the meeting.

Chautala is the leader of the Jannayak Janata Party (JJP) which is an alliance partner in the government led by the Bharatiya Janata Party in Haryana. Some of the JJP deputies were said to have faced pressure from agitated farmers.

Chautala had said earlier that he would quit the state government if he was unable to ensure a minimum support price (MSP) for the purchase of farmers’ crops.

The three agricultural laws that farmers are protesting against are: the Agricultural Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act of 2020; the Farmer Empowerment and Protection Act 2020 on Price Insurance and Agricultural Services and the Essential Commodities Act 2020 (Amendment).
