KARACHI, Pakistan / ANKARA, Turkey

Turkey, Pakistan and Azerbaijan agreed to formulate a common strategy to stem the rising tide of Islamophobia around the world, mainly in the West, and to fight terrorism, including its state-sponsored form.

The agreement was reached during the second trilateral meeting between the three countries, which was attended by Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu and his Pakistani and Azerbaijani counterparts Shah Mehmood Qureshi and Jeyhun Bayramov, according to a statement from the Ministry of Affairs. foreigners.

The three sides discussed various issues, including trilateral cooperation in the fields of peace and security, trade and investment, science and technology, education and cultural cooperation.

Expressing concern over “serious” human rights violations in disputed Jammu and Kashmir and the rise of Islamophobia, they agreed to launch joint efforts to defend Islamic values.

The three foreign ministers, the statement said, also discussed the ongoing Afghan peace process, which aims to end a 19-year conflict in the war-torn country. Pushing their weight in the fragile process, the meeting hailed Pakistan’s role in facilitating the talks.

The meeting, he added, decided to draw up plans to deal with the economic impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

Turkey wants “ dynamism ”

Later, at a joint press conference, Cavusoglu said Ankara wanted to bring “dynamism” to its economic relations with Islamabad by increasing the volume of bilateral trade.

The current volume of trade between the two countries, he said, is only $ 800 million, which does not reflect the true potential of bilateral trade.

“We talked about the importance of infrastructure development, especially in the area of transport and energy,” he said.

He recalled that the first summit was held in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, in 2017, adding that the third edition would be held in Turkey.

“Today we have decided to hold meetings more frequently in this format. So we don’t have to wait three to four years,” he added.

Referring to the trade and trade agreements signed during Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s last visit to Islamabad in February last year, Cavusoglu said the agreements would help increase the volume of bilateral trade and investment in the days to come.

The two sides, he noted, have stepped up their defense and security cooperation in terms of military equipment.

In July 2018, the Pakistani Navy signed a contract for the acquisition of four MILGEM-class ships from the Turkish defense company ASFAT.

In October 2019, Turkish President Erdogan cut the first metal plate of the first MILGEM Ada class corvette during a ceremony in Istanbul.

Ankara bought 52 Mashahk trainers from Pakistan.

Currently, Cavusoglu continued, around 100 Turkish companies are operating in Pakistan in different sectors, including health, education, construction, tourism and services.

Ankara intends to expand its trade and investment with Islamabad, he said.

Baku thank you for your support

Azerbaijani Bayramov praised the support of Turkey and Pakistan in resolving the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and called on Pakistani and Turkish companies to help rebuild the Karabakh region recently liberated from Armenian occupation.

Pakistani Qureshi thanked his counterparts for attending the meeting, noting that senior diplomats decided to step up and deepen trilateral cooperation.

He thanked Ankara for its continued support to Islamabad on the Kashmir issue.

Reiterating Islamabad’s support for Turkey on [the Turkish Republic of Northern] Cyprus, he said, demanded the resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh issue in accordance with UN Security Council resolutions.
