Cyprus sees an increase in the number of migrants after Turkey opens its border with Europe

Thank you for reading and for your interest in the news. Cyprus sees an increase in the number of migrants after Turkey's opening to Europe and now with details

Hind Al Soulia – Riyadh – The number of migrants trying to reach Cyprus has increased in the past few days after Turkey opened its western borders and stopped intercepting people trying to reach Europe last week.

This week, at least 223 migrants reached the islands to the south from Turkey, 83 kilometers from Cyprus. Cypriot officials have recently accused Turkey of deliberately channeling separatist Turkish Cypriot people from the north of the island to the internationally recognized south.

Interior Minister Nicos Nouris said the number of economic migrants trying to enter Cyprus was becoming unmanageable although he said the refugees would not be returned to a country where their life is in danger.

This certainly concerns us and we want to see what measures we can take to guard against any change in the demographic character of the country, but without neglecting human suffering, said Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades.

Furthermore, Mr. Anastasiades said he had met with Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci to express our grave concern over the organized and growing illegal flow of migrants passing through the Green Line, stressing that appropriate measures should be taken to prevent a further worsening of the situation, reported the Cypriot news agency.

Nouris, the Minister of the Interior, said that speeding up the asylum process and taking over the EU negotiations with third countries were the steps keys to make room for refugees fleeing conflict while stopping migrants fleeing poverty.

The number of economic migrants is no longer manageable, simply because our limits have been exceeded, he added.

A senior Cypriot police official, Petros Zeniou, said that a large number of immigrants and refugees were waiting in Turkey to enter the European Union, including in Cyprus.

Thousands are massed on the Turkish border with Greece after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan authorized migrants to leave for Europe last week.

According to an agreement with the EU signed in 2016, Ankara is supposed to prevent migrants from leaving for European coasts in exchange for billions of euros in EU funding to take care of refugees Syrians in Turkey.

Erdogan and other officials have complained that the EU has failed to support Turkey in the context of an upsurge in migrants resulting from an escalation of violence in neighboring Syria.
