Pakistan calls on UK to extradite Nawaz Sharif

Pakistani government says it has written to British authorities requesting the return of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, who flew to London for medical treatment in 2019 after a court granted him an indefinite bond for medical reasons.

Sharif, a former three-time prime minister, was ousted for corruption allegations in 2017 and was serving a seven-year prison sentence before the Lahore High Court granted him unlimited medical bail, after which he was arrested. ; flew to Britain for medical treatment.

Pakistan cannot request Sharif's extradition as it has no extradition treaty with Britain, the Foreign Ministry said.

"A letter to bring Nawaz Sharif back was written through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs … This letter was a legal formality to bring him home, which has been sent," said Prime Minister’s adviser Imran Khan on the & Information and dissemination of Firdous Ashiq Awan at a press conference.

Under bail conditions, Sharif was to send his medical reports to a court-appointed medical commission, which would then determine whether his bail could be extended – but Sharif did not send such information, said Awan .

"The medical council requires their medical report, but they send letters and certificates, there is a difference between the medical report and the letters," she said.

Last year, Sharif's doctor claimed that he had suffered a minor heart attack and that he was "fighting for his life" in prison.

Sharif’s younger brother Shehbaz Sharif, the opposition leader, said in a statement that the Pakistani government "had no legal authority" to write such a letter to Britain.

"This is an utterly immoral and irrational act, the government's haste to reveal its criminal and malicious intentions," the statement said.

Former Prime Minister Sharif, 70, known as the "Punjab Lion", is a political survivor who has repeatedly returned to the highest level of the country, highlighting the unpredictable nature of Pakistani politics.
