Turkey will gradually begin to ease restrictions imposed to stem the spread of the new coronavirus from March, the country’s president said on Wednesday.

“We are starting the gradual normalization process at the beginning of March by dividing our provinces into four categories in accordance with the criteria established by our Ministry of Health,” Recep Tayyip Erdogan said after a Cabinet meeting in presidential complex.

“March will be a month where we cover a lot of ground in terms of vaccination,” Erdogan added.

He said the provinces will be categorized into “low”, “medium”, “high” and “very high” based on infection rates and the vaccination process.

The president said that around 5.7 million coronavirus vaccines have been administered across the country, adding: “We have made the necessary contacts to [acquiring more] vaccines that we will need first. “

Recalling that the government announced a gradual transition to face-to-face education in schools after the Cabinet meeting last week, he said the process had been delayed in some provinces due to heavy snowfall.

The process will continue, he added.

Turkey reported 7,325 new cases of coronavirus on Wednesday, including 649 symptomatic patients, according to the health ministry.

The number of cases in the country topped 2.6 million, while the nationwide death toll reached 27,738, with 86 dead in the last day.

On January 14, Turkey launched a mass vaccination campaign against COVID, starting with healthcare workers and senior officials to encourage public confidence in vaccines.

Since last December, Turkey has applied a curfew on weeknights and a full curfew on weekends to curb the spread of the virus.

The pandemic has killed more than 2.42 million people in 192 countries and regions since December 2019.

More than 109.77 million cases have been reported worldwide, with recoveries now of more than 61.73 million, according to figures compiled by Johns Hopkins University in the United States.

The United States, India and Brazil remain the most affected countries in terms of cases.
