Today the president came to my vaccination

Our government is therefore betting everything on vaccination. We are far from leading the global push, but we are proud of our efforts so far.

Like journalists, teachers are another group that will have access to immunizations ahead of others in society. The government hopes this will allow schools to reopen in time for the next school year which begins in July.

My two daughters have been studying at home since April. They miss their friends. We all miss our old lives. My children are already happy with the hope of going back to school, meeting, studying and playing with their peers.

I am cautiously optimistic that the vaccine will help us overcome COVID-19, but we need this view to be more widely shared. This is where free and priority vaccinations for journalists come in.

Our country needs us

Over the next three days, 5,512 journalists will be streaming at this new gym in central Jakarta. We went to the top of the list because, says our president, the country needs us to spread hope.

The President, commonly known as Jokowi, knows a good photo opportunity when he sees one and came into the room this morning to wish us good luck. I hope these vaccinations can protect journalists while you go to work, he said. U.S. too.

We get the Coronavac vaccine produced locally by Indonesian company Bio Farma after it was imported in bulk from Sinovac in China.

It’s been just over a week since the Indonesian regulator granted emergency use authorization for 13 million doses, including those we receive manufactured by Bio Farma.

Raw materials for Sinovac’s COVID-19 vaccine will continue to come from China in the coming months. Around 140 million doses are expected by July 2021.

To date, 1,363,138 health workers have received the first vaccination, and 825,650 of them have also received their second vaccination.

181 million vaccinations at the end of the year

The next phase of the government’s 15-month plan to immunize 181 million people of our population of 270 million is to continue through May. Its target is 38.5 million people, including religious leaders, MPs, civil servants and soldiers, as well as journalists and five million educators, teachers and lecturers.

The ultimate goal is for everyone of working age, that is, between 18 and 64 years old, immune to the most serious effects of COVID-19. This week, Jokowi suggested it could be done by the end of this year. However, the government still has a long way to go. A recent poll suggests that nearly half of Indonesians are hesitant or unsure whether they should get the vaccine.

Some 41 percent of respondents to the Indonesian Political Indicators Survey said they did not want to be vaccinated. Another 4.2 percent of the community said they did not know or did not respond. On the plus side, 15.8 percent said they were very keen to get the hang of it while 39.1 percent said they were quite willing.

I asked my colleague in the queue today if she was worried about the vaccine. No, she said. She is sure it will work and sure of the importance of our work, to provide facts to the public so that they are not swayed by misinformation.

She is more unreservedly optimistic than I am, but our views are similar. We both hope that vaccinations will be the start of a new chapter for our country. We know this will not be the end of COVID-19.

The vaccine will provide some immunity, but the virus will not go away. Masks and other health protocols will still be a part of life for a while.

Still, it’s a good day, a day full of hope. I am grateful. Even though the file I am signing indicates that my age is 10 years older than me.
