Gatwick and Heathrow: Boris Johnson expected to take stock of international travel with new traffic light system




The Prime Minister is expected to take stock of international travel as part of his latest response to the coronavirus pandemic.

Boris Johnson will lead a press conference in Downing Street, joined by England’s Chief Medical Officer Professor Chris Whitty and Chief Science Advisor Sir Patrick Vallance on Monday 5 April.

It has been reported that the PM will announce a traffic light system to assess overseas destinations, lowering controls on travel to countries considered to be of the lowest risk.

Under current UK lockdown rules, overseas holidays will only be allowed on May 17 at the earliest, with Gatwick and Heathrow currently open only for essential travel.

What is the traffic light system for international travel?

The prime minister is set to outline the government’s approach to lifting restrictions on overseas vacations from May 17 at the earliest.

He will give more details on the framework for easing overseas travel restrictions ahead of the Global Travel Task Force report, due on April 12.

While the ban on overseas travel from England will not be lifted until May 17 according to the roadmap, Downing Street has said that when the rules are relaxed there will be a traffic light system based on risks with red, orange and green notes for countries. around the world.

Travelers arriving from countries classified as green will not be required to self-isolate, although pre-departure and post-arrival testing is still required.

For those classified as orange or red, the restrictions will remain as is with the arrivals required to isolate or enter quarantine.

More countries are expected to be on the government’s ‘red list’, meaning travelers from there are not allowed into the UK unless they are UK or Irish nationals.

Travelers from the Philippines, Pakistan, Kenya and Bangladesh will not be allowed to pass through Heathrow or Gatwick airports from 4 a.m. on April 9 to protect the UK from new variants of the coronavirus.

The list now numbers 39 countries, covering large swathes of Africa and South America.
