THE Prime Minister has been criticized for launching a “political attack” on Sadiq Khan during a government press conference on the coronavirus.

Mr Johnson accused Mr Khan of ‘blowing up’ Transport for London’s (TfL) finances with ‘irresponsible pricing policy’ after leaving them ‘in good shape’.

He added: “And I’m afraid there was a black hole in TfL’s finances before Covid even started, because I’m sure you and your readers all remember it.”

The comments made on Monday at a televised coronavirus press conference in the £ 2.6million Downing Street media boardroom were made during pre-election purdah for the mayoral election of London May 6.

Ashton and Failsworth MP and Deputy Labor chief Angela Rayner called for an investigation into the incident and accused Boris Johnson of a ‘political attack’ on Mr Khan, a candidate for a second mayoral term of London as a Labor candidate.

In a letter to the Secretary to Cabinet, Ms Rayner called on the Prime Minister to issue a public apology for abusing public resources and misleading the public.

Under the Ministerial Code, government ministers do not have the right to use government resources for the campaigning of political parties during an election period.

The restrictions, set out in the Local Government Act 1986, prohibit government officials from posting “any material which, in whole or in part, appears to be designed to affect public support for a political party.”

In her letter, Ms Rayner says that in the four years that Sadiq Khan was mayor before Covid struck, he reduced TfL’s operating deficit, left by the former mayor, by 71% and increased the reserves of 13% cash.

She adds that in recent years London has been the only major city in Western Europe not to have received direct government funding to run daily transport services and has therefore been hit hard by a 95% drop. the number of passengers. numbers during the pandemic.

Last month, the entire Cabinet was accused of violating the Ministerial Code for failing to declare its financial interests, with Labor Party analysis showing that during the Covid crisis, £ 1.9bn of Government contracts were awarded to companies linked to the Conservative Party.
