Boris Johnson pledges an additional 52 million for coronavirus vaccine research, more than 20,000 tested in the UK
The UK Department of Health has said that more than 20,000 people have been tested for the coronavirus.
A daily update of the figures on its website said: At 6 a.m. on March 6, 2020, 20,338 people were tested in the UK, of which 20,175 were confirmed negative and 163 were confirmed positive. One patient who tested positive for Covid-19 died.
This comes as Boris Johnson has pledged an additional 46 million (52.7 million) dollars for coronavirus vaccine research and rapid diagnostic tests.
The British Prime Minister announced the funding during a visit to a laboratory in Bedfordshire, where British scientists are working on a quick and inexpensive way to diagnose coronavirus.
There is currently no vaccine available to protect people from Covid-19, but Mr Johnson said he hoped one would be ready in about a year.
Professor Chris Whitty, Chief Medical Officer of Health, previously stated that the UK "will not have a vaccine available for the first wave" of a pandemic, but that it is still important to Develop one for all future waves.
