David Plouffe made a mistake in 2016.

After confidently predicting Donald Trumps 'defeat, the campaign director credited with Barack Obamas' historic victory in 2008 saw a reality TV star become commander-in-chief. Four years later, Plouffe says he reviewed the election night. Again and again.

And after absorbing the lessons of that day, he wrote a book on what Democrats need to do to defeat the Trump reelection battle, as he told Edward-Isaac Dovere in the last episode of The ticket: Atlantic politics, probably has the biggest issues ever known. They discuss the campaign for the re-election of presidents, the state of the Democratic Party and a contest for the nomination which has suddenly become a race for two.

• Plouffe on the democratic candidates: Theres going to be a lot of pressure on Joe Biden and his campaign if hes the candidate. Likewise with Bernie. And they should have it. If you don't win this election, it's shameful. You are first and foremost the person We all have a role to play, but this candidate and his campaign leaders will win better. Because the consequences for the planet and for this country are difficult to put into words.
• Plouffe on the campaign of president Trumps: I studied carefully each presidential re-election in progress, was part of an outgoing president having incredible advantages and weapons. And this guy obsessed with his re-election. That's all he cares about. The threat is looming, and he is ready for this battle. But there are more than enough voters to get rid of him.
• Plouffe on the debates of the general elections: I suppose that Trump will do them, because how can he not be part of this circus and these projectors? These will only be caged geriatric matches. I mean, it's going to be something for history books.
