ISLAMABAD: As coronavirus cases continue to increase across the country, Prime Minister Imran Khan downplayed the devastating effects of the contagion, saying that the death rate, currently 2.1%, is below the rate of expected mortality.

Addressing a press briefing with his main assistants, the Prime Minister said: “We thought our intensive care units (ICUs) would be filled now, but they are not.”

Currently, the total number of coronaviruses was 16,347 with 4,105 recoveries and 361 deaths. Punjab recorded 6,220 cases, Sind 6,053, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) 2,313, Baluchistan 1,049, Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) 333, Islamabad Capital Territory (TIC) 313 and Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) 66.

Prime Minister Imran said the government had decided to merge the Prime Minister’s fund and the Ehsaas project to help workers and day workers affected by the coronavirus blockage.

The Prime Minister said the government would pay Rs4 for every Re1 that people donate to the Prime Minister’s corona relief fund. He added that the fund would be used to help those who lost their jobs due to bans to contain the spread of the virus.

Prime Minister Imran said that an SMS campaign would be launched for the relief fund and that the government would look for evidence of unemployment. Referring to the volunteer force, the Tiger Force, the Prime Minister said that the volunteers will contact all union councils across the country and assist the local administration in this activity.

The Prime Minister also said that the government was doing its best to repatriate Pakistanis abroad who wanted to return to the country.

These people are our VIPs because the remittances they send to the country support us immeasurably.

The Prime Minister also congratulated Dr. Sania Nishtar and the Ehsaas program for reaching out and helping those in need.

He said that thanks to this program, 6.8 million families have received aid and 81 billion rupees have been distributed. He added that the distribution was fair and that all the provinces received what was required.

Residents of Sindh have received the most assistance through this program, said Prime Minister Imran.

The Minister of Planning, Development and Special Initiatives, Asad Umar, who also leads efforts to fight coronaviruses, assured the nation that the situation of coronavirus in the country was “not out of control”.

He said that Pakistan’s trend was different from that of European countries, so the country was doing its own modeling. “It is true that we have a large number of cases and deaths. The death toll will increase in the coming days, but our situation is not as bad as in other countries, “he said.

Speaking about easing the foreclosure restrictions, Umar said the government would make the decision after May 9, which would depend on compliance with the restrictions and social distancing measures. “I urge you all to cooperate with the government [in following preventive measures] even more rigorously than before. “

PM’s focal point, Dr Faisal Sultan, said that the situation in Pakistan was not as bad as in the United States or Europe. He added that the government had analyzed global and local trends in coronaviruses before making decisions.

The government of Dr. Zafar Mirzathe, the Prime Minister’s medical assistant, would soon launch a program to protect medical workers working on the front lines of the coronavirus pandemic, adding that the government was “worried about medical workers”.

SAPM said the country now produces its own personal protective equipment (PPE) but it has been observed that PPE is “not being used rationally” in some places. “We will train doctors on the proper use of PPE.”

He added that the government would also provide psychological support to those working on the front lines.

Comparing Pakistan’s situation to neighboring Iran which has been severely affected by the virus, the Prime Minister’s special assistant on health, Dr. Zafar Mirza, said that Pakistan was “relatively better off”.

Industry and Production Minister Hammad Azhar said their three-month utility bills would be paid by the government. It is estimated that 350,000 small businesses would benefit from the program, he added.

Prime Minister’s advisor on social protection and poverty reduction, Sania Nishtar, said that anyone who signed up for the Ehsaas disbursement program would receive a message within the next 10 days. She urged people not to visit distribution centers until they receive a message from 8171 so as not to create haste in violation of social distancing guidelines.

She assured them that the government was working to resolve all the problems people faced in collecting their amounts.

At the conclusion of the briefing, the PM urged people to stay at home and observe social distancing when they went to the mosques. “It is a difficult time for our nation. If you do not maintain social distance and do not take preventive measures, we will all suffer, ”he warned.
