‘I don’t know if Imran Khan remembers, but I ran for Pakistan before India debut’: Tendulkar

Hitter legend Sachin Tendulkar has revealed that before making his international debut for India, he took the field for Pakistan in a match between teams from the two neighboring states.

The big hitter, in his autobiography, Playing It My Way, recalled being on the pitch for Pakistan in 1987, two years before his India debut in 1989.

The little master made his official international debut against rival Pakistan in 1989 in Karachi, but very few people are aware that he got his first taste of international cricket when he lined up for Pakistan in a match against India at Brabourne Stadium Mumbai.

In his book, he also wondered if the then Pakistani captain, Imran Khan, recalled employing him in the field.

“I don’t know if Imran Khan remembers this or has an idea that I once lined up for his Pakistani team,” Tendulkar writes in an excerpt cited by byzeenews.india.com.

Tendulkar further recalled that Pakistani cricketers Javed Miandad and Abdul Qadir left the pitch during the lunch break. As a standby outfielder, Tendulkar was invited to join the visiting team.

Tendulkar also mentioned how he almost caught up with Kapil Dev in the game but couldn’t reach the ball despite a long run. He explained that if he had been placed halfway rather than long term, he could have participated in the layoff for Pakistan.

Tendulkar is the all-time leading scorer in test matches and one-day internationals. He retired in 2013.
