Interview with Alysa Liu before the world junior championships – OlympicTalk
Alysa Liu stayed up until 7 a.m. after winning his second consecutive US title in January. Not because she was celebrating 14 years of her homework.
She stayed up until 4 a.m. the next night, thinking her extra homework would be child's play, but it was much more difficult than expected. Unlike winning her second national title, she told the media.
It's different because it's my second time among seniors, Liu told NBCSports.com. But still as exciting.
She finished algebra and biology before the championships, but she pushed back a subject. To help her stay awake during the nights, she chatted on the phone with a friend at home in California.
In Greensboro, the silver medalist in the Junior Grand Prix final spoke with members of the media about the prospect of the World Junior Championships.
The event takes place this weekend in Tallinn, Estonia and will be broadcast live on the ISU YouTube page. The women's short program begins at 3:45 a.m.ET Friday and free skating is Saturday.
This conversation has been edited for clarity.
Why did you stay up so late?
Liu: My Chinese homework is quite hard. Each lesson consists of two to four essays that I have to write. It took time. But the latter had two tests and two tests. I had a total of seven essays to write in Chinese, then I had to do four quizzes and four tests.
Is that normal for you?
Liu: I don't think I've ever slept so early, I guess. He doesn't stay up late. He gets up early! I think I only stayed up until 2 a.m. before New Years.
What is your favorite class?
Liu: I would say Chinese, but it's so hard. I'm good at this. I agree. I used to speak fluent Chinese when I was younger, as very fluent. I continue to open my first and second year notebooks. I'm like, how did I get almost all of this? I can understand everything, basically, and speak it. My accents are not good at all. I can read and write about it, always working on it.
Then I stopped for five years. I did about seven years of Chinese school, then quit for five years and start over. I'm very slow to write in Chinese. I'm like, wait, is this shot supposed to be there? Nope.
So it's rusty but it comes back.
Liu: Some of my lessons and sessions that I have to do, I have to make voice recordings. My teachers say my pronunciation is good, and my father [who comes from China] is like, no, it's not good at all! [Laughs]
Watching the world junior championships, you saw a lot of these skaters at the junior grand prix final. Are you taking notes on this in this competition and, if so, what?
Liu: Yes I think. I really want to focus only on my programs. Try to do better than nationals at the world junior championships. I don't really think about the score, I just want to make a very good program.
Have you started thinking about music for next season? Since then, you have now kept the same short program for two seasons.
Liu: No, not yet, but I think soon though. I really like to make this short program. I'm not tired of it. It was actually my idea to keep it.
