Former University of Michigan football player sues school for alleged abuse by deceased doctor

An unidentified former football player from the University of Michigan is suing the school and its board of directors for allegations of sexual abuse.

The trial before the United States District Court in Detroit on Monday seeks certification for class action and seeks to include anyone else who claims to have been assaulted by the late Dr. Robert E. Anderson, the doctor of the # 39; school.

The plaintiff, identified as John Doe, accuses the university of not having fired the doctor despite complaints about him dating back several decades.

Doe, a New York resident, said that he was a college fellow from 1989 to 1993 and that he had played football for the Wolverines.

The lawsuit is the latest in a long line of cases the university faces for the way it handled allegations of sexual abuse by Anderson between the 1960s and his retirement in 2003. He is died in 2008.

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel said last week that she would investigate the complaints against Anderson and how the school would treat them if the school waived the attorney-client privilege and fully cooperated. The school declined the offer, saying it plans to stay the course with its own investigation.

The university acknowledged that some campus employees were aware of the charges against the doctor before a complaint in 2018 that led to a police investigation. The school has received over 100 complaints about Anderson on a hotline for people who have information to communicate.

Two weeks and more after hiring Steptoe & Johnson to investigate the allegations against Anderson, the school said it would find another law firm after learning that some of its lawyers were representing clients High-level accused of sexual misconduct.
