Hockey Canada appoints Shane Doan as GM, Claude Julien as head coach for Olympic team
Shane Doan will be the general manager of Team Canada’s men’s hockey during the Beijing Olympics, Hockey Canada announced on Friday. Claude Julien was appointed as head coach.
Scott Salmond will serve as assistant general manager, while Blair Mackassey will take over as director of the players’ staff. Julien is joined by coaches Nolan Baumgartner, Jeremy Colliton and Tyler Dietrich behind the bench.
Doan and Julien were both involved as GM and head coaches for Canada respectively during the recent Channel One Cup in Russia and Czech Republic. The Canadian team emerged as bronze medalists, finishing behind Russia and gold medalist Finland. Doan also served as assistant general manager for Canada at the 2021 IIHF World Championship in Latvia last summer.
As a player, Doan is a two-time IIHF World Champion and represented Canada at the 2006 Olympic Games in Turin. Doan is currently the chief hockey development officer for the Arizona Coyotes, the franchise he has spent his entire 21-year career with.
Julien’s last full-time NHL coaching appearance was with the Montreal Canadiens, losing his job 18 games into the 2020-21 season. He won a Stanley Cup with the Boston Bruins during the 2010-11 season and won a gold medal as an assistant coach for the Canadian men’s hockey team at the 2014 Sochi Olympics. Julien also served as an assistant coach for Canada’s 2016 World Cup of Hockey win.
Canada will try to improve on its bronze medal performance from the 2018 Olympics in Pyeongchang. That year, like the upcoming tournament in Beijing, the competition will be played without NHL players. Canada will play its first game against Germany on February 10.
Salmond said the team will make the selection final on January 24. Team USA announced the roster on Thursday.
