Jack Quinlivan had been through a lot in his two seasons as the University of Maines ice hockey captain.
More than most.
He led the Black Bears during the first pandemic season, in which COVID-19 restrictions at the state and university levels forced the team to play all 15 games of the regular season on the road before hosting a lone playoff game at home, which they held. lost. UMaine finished on 3-11-2.
Quinlivan decided to return as a graduate student and mentor this year’s team, as the NCAA awarded all student athletes an extra year to qualify.
Then the man who recruited and coached him, UMaine head coach Red Gendron, died on April 9 while playing golf at Penobscot Valley Country Club in Orono.
Wins have been hard to come by this season as the Black Bears will set a record of 3-14-4, 1-10-2 in Hockey East in a 7:30 p.m. Friday home game against Boston College (10-10-4 , 5-7-3). But Quinlivan, who is central to the fourth line and one of the team’s best defensive forwards and penalty killers, has been integral to helping the team adapt to unprecedented changes during his tenure as captain.
You just have to take it one step at a time, said the shaggy, hardworking Quinlivan. There is much to learn, many life lessons. But dealing with new circumstances and how to deal with them was the exciting part.
Quinlivan said he understands his role and is trying to improve every day as a leader and player.
Being a leader and being in challenging situations is something I am proud of, said the Shrewsbury, Massachusetts native. The team has done a pretty good job of dealing with their emotions this past year and this season. We have to keep building and working hard. This is a good group of guys who have been through a lot. We must focus on the task ahead.
He said the most difficult challenge he has faced is the unexpected change of coach this year. Ben Barr, a 39-year-old former associate head coach for NCAA champion University of Massachusetts, took over as head coach after Gendrons’ death.
I never realized how change can affect you mentally and physically and how you have to adapt to change, Quinlivan said. It’s much harder than people realize. You learn a lot about yourself when you’re in an environment that forces you to adapt. But it makes you better as a person and as a player.
Quinlivan has provided two assists in 19 games this season and now has four goals and seven assists in 112 games in his career.
You couldn’t have had a better man guiding you through all the situations we’ve had between the passing of COVID and Reds, said senior winger/center Adam Dawe. Jack goes out of his way to check on guys. Last year we had a lot of guys in quarantine. He is really approachable.
UMaine have gone a modest 2-3-2 in their last seven games and have been involved in 11 games decided by one goal or ended in a draw.
Jack has figured it out. That’s why he’s our captain, Barr said. He is an adult child. He can see the big picture. He has been invaluable to us, especially to me as a new coach. He helped me understand where the program is and where the players are.
Quinlivan said there have been plenty of other leaders on the team, including senior defender Jakub Sirota, sophomore linemates Lynden Breen and Donavan Houle and even freshmen such as defender David Breazeale and center Nolan Renwick.
Jakub has taken his game on and off the ice to a new level; Lynden and Donavan have really evolved and discovered how to play at a high level and lead by example and David and Nolan have a great work ethic. They set the tone for years to come and it’s really cool to watch. They’re laying a great foundation, Quinlivan said.
The Black Bears have 11 games to go, all Hockey East games, and Quinlivan expects good things.
I’m excited to see where this group is headed. We haven’t played our best hockey yet, but the tide is turning. Were able to put together a good piece and the whole team thinks so, Quinlivan said.
I feel blessed to be part of a school that is proud of its hockey program. I’m going to embrace the next two months.
