Utah state football holds its first training session in the spring Tuesday afternoon – Cache Valley Daily

LOGAN, Utah Utah State football held its initial spring training Tuesday afternoon while sixth-year head coach Gary Andersen had 95 players in training gear. one hour and 45 minutes on Merlin Olsen field at Maverik stadium.

Of the 95 players who wore helmets, jerseys and shorts, three are graduate transfers, 25 will be seniors, 13 will be juniors, 24 will be sophomores and 30 will be freshmen. In all, Utah State returns 13 runners (O-8, D-5) as part of 46 recipient letters (O-23, D-21, S-2) from the team of recent years who finished with a record of 7-6 and played in his 14th bowl game in school history in the Tropical Smoothie Cafe Frisco Bowl. The USU concluded the Mountain West game 6-2 to finish third in the Mountain division.

The State of Utah also welcomes in return 25 players (O-11, D-13, S-1) who shirted in red last season, to accompany 10 other players (O-5, D -4, S-1) who were members of the in 2019. Of the 35 players listed above, eight saw action last season. USU is also welcoming 14 newcomers this spring, which includes six transfers and eight first-year students.

The main student of Utah States in 2020 is WR Soap Scarver, who is just the third American consensus in the history of the school. Scarver was named a member of the Walter Camp Football Foundation's All-American First Team, the Football Writers Association of America and Phil Steeles magazine, and won the honors of the American's Second All-American Team. Football Coaches Association as kicker after its second year season in 2018. Scarver was also named first all-Mountain West team as both second year and junior kicker in 2018 and 2019 , respectively. The USU is also returning senior S Shaq Bond, who earned an all-mountain West honorable mention a season ago.

Other beginners returning to Utah in 2020 include OL Demytrick Aliifua senior, senior S Troy Lefeged Jr., senior LB Kevin Meitzenheimer, senior WR Jordan Nathan, OL senior Ty Shaw, DE Justus Tei senior TE Carson Terrell senior OL Alfred Edwards junior, CB Andre Grayson junior, OL Kyler Hack junior, WR Deven Thompkins junior and second OL Karter Shaw student.

Today was more of a mental day for us, trying to make new calls with our defense, because we have changed a lot, said Lefeged. I'm just trying to lead by example, because we have a lot of new faces here.

During the five-week period, the Aggies will participate in 15 spring training sessions, including their blue-to-white spring match on Thursday, April 9 at Maverik Stadium at 5:30 p.m. In all, five more practices will be open to the public this spring on March 14, 21, 28 and April 4 and 9.
