Men's tennis clinches 5th home win against Liberty University
The Bruins achieved a winning performance in a short time.
UCLA men's tennis (9-4, 2-0 Pac-12) won a 6-1 victory over Liberty University (8-5) at the Los Angeles Tennis Center on Monday. The victory marks the team's fifth consecutive victory and improves the Bruins' home record to 5-0. The match was originally scheduled for Tuesday but was moved a day earlier due to the expected rain.
"Honestly, we didn't know that until just before our Sunday training," said young Bryce Pereira. "But we were already preparing because we knew it was going to be a tough week."
UCLA started the day with a double point on the third field, while Pereira and sophomore Patrick Zahraj won a 7-6 (2) victory over Chase Burton and Deji Thomas-Smith of Liberty.
"Doubles can sometimes make or break the match," said Pereira. "It puts a lot of pressure on the other team, because trying to get four singles wins with a top team is really difficult."
After UCLA won singles victories on courts two and one, sophomore Roscoe Bellamy clinched a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Thomas-Smith for the fifth win home of the season Bruins.
"Getting that first game under my belt was good, so overall, I'm just happy with how it went," said Bellamy. "Playing at home is always a huge boost because we always have a large group of people and a large crowd coming out."
Coach Billy Martin said he was happy to see Bellamy overcome recent injuries to clinch victory – his first double-game win of his career at UCLA.
“He really had a tough race here. The past four years have been extremely difficult with injuries, "said Martin. "He was unlucky, but he is determined to get out of it and is playing well now."
Games continued after Bellamy's decisive victory, and the Bruins won in the remaining two games. Martin said he was glad his team could stay active after not playing together for more than a week.
"We hit a bit, but I wanted to get used to the courts," said Martin. "(Liberty) was a good team, and they beat good opponents. I think it was really important for us to have this match before USC and not to go near two weeks without a match. "
UCLA will resume its season Thursday when it welcomes its USC rival at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. With rains in the forecast for most of the week, Martin said the team anticipated potential weather delays.
"I spoke with their coach today," said Martin. "We will see how it goes, but we are both concerned about it."
The match play should start at 3 p.m.
