Due to COVID-19 coronavirus issues, the Division I and II Boys' Hockey Championship Series will not be held at Brown University this weekend.
Tuesday morning, the Rhode Island Interscholastic League announced the relocation of the Dee I and Dee II finals from Meehan Auditorium to Boss Ice Arena at the University of Rhode Island.
Last week, Brown announced that it was placing restrictions on school events, canceling the in-person events for which 100 or more participants were expected.
In the statement, RIIL said that the Schneider Arena at Providence College, which has hosted championship series in the past, is also not available. RIIL Executive Director Tom Mezzanotte said efforts have been made but that there is no ice time available at the arena.
Game 1 of each final series begins Friday. In D-II, No. 4 East Greenwich plays the winner of Tuesday's semi-final between South Kingstown and Lincoln. This final will start at 6 p.m. No. 1 La Salle versus No. 2 Mount St. Charles will open the D-I series immediately after.
The Mounties and Rams will play the second game at 6:30 p.m. Saturday with a possible match 3 at a time Monday to be determined. The second game in the D-II series will be played at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, with Game 3 scheduled for Monday at a time to be determined.
Although high school hockey is currently scheduled in Rhode Island, this is not the case in Connecticut. The state interschool sports conference has canceled all remaining winter tournaments due to coronavirus problems. In Massachusetts, the high school basketball and hockey tournaments, which culminate in state championships this weekend in Boston and Worcester, will continue as planned.
Mezzanotte said he hoped the RIIL tournaments could end – the boys and girls state basketball tournaments would end next weekend – but the league would make any decisions based on State Department of Health information as well as feelings of the member schools of the league. .
