Three home games for men’s tennis this weekend
No. 29 Auburn returns to the Yarbrough Tennis Center in Auburn this weekend for three home games.
The Tigers will host the No. 35 Mississippi State in a 3 p.m. game on Friday; it’s Kids Day and there’s free face painting.
Sunday, Alabama will entertain number 24 Texas A&M at 12 noon and Alabama A&M Sunday at 4 pm. Fans will receive free koozies on the first game and free pizza on the second game, while supplies last.
“Mississippi State is a great team,” head coach Auburn Bobby Reynolds said. “They’re defined by the way they fight, they’re very, very hard to take down quickly. They’re willing to put an extra ball on the field, they’re willing to scrap, they’re willing to make it ugly We have to be ready for a physical fight on Friday.
“This year they have more success at the top of their lineup, so when we go in we need to be successful at the bottom and also have an incredible fight on one and two, which we usually do with Tyler ( Stice) and Jan (Galka).
Texas A&M is the reverse where they struggled on one, two and three during the SEC season and had success on four, five and six. In either scenario, our entire lineup needs to be ready to fight no matter who or where they play.
“It was important with our SEC schedule to make sure we had a good start. Confidence is scary and as our guys keep winning and gaining confidence, winning those SEC games feeds them and makes them want more.
“With six games to go they are not happy but they definitely understand the magnitude of what they are doing. They are a Top 25 team and now they are starting to see and believe it for themselves. We have ourselves in a very good situation.”
Auburn is ranked 15-4 for the spring season, 4-2 in SEC play, and ranked No. 29 in the latest ITA team ratings and No. 25 in the Tennis Channel/USTA Top 25. No. 35 Mississippi State is 12-8 in general and 2-5 in conference action.
No. 24 Texas A&M is 17-9 overall and 4-2 in the SEC; the Aggies are No. 20 in the Tennis Channel/USYA Top 25 and play in Alabama on Friday. Alabama A&M is 2-9 and will play in Jackson State on Saturday.
In the latest ITA individual rankings, the Tigers still have three players in singles: Tyler Sticke (91), Tad Maclean (111) and Jan Galka (115). maclean and Find Murgett are nationally ranked No. 60 as a double tandem. Maclean, with 66 career doubles wins, now ranks ninth all-time among the Auburn career leaders in that category.
Mississippi State has two ranked singles players, Florian Broska (39) and Nemanja Malesevic (72). Texas A&M’s Noah Schachter is ranked in singles (56) and doubles (57 with Austin Abbrat).
All of Auburn’s home tennis events are at the Yarbrough Tennis Center (1717 Richland Road, Auburn) and admission is free.
