Cricket Leads New Story in Northeast, Says Odang | The Guardian Nigeria News
Gombe States Cricket Field Officer, Mercy Ene Odang, has said the sport is gaining popularity among young people in the state, as well as the entire Northeast Zone.
Odang, a staff member of the Nigeria Cricket Federation (NCF), said insecurity is no longer the only story coming out of the zone, adding that cricket plays a positive role in the region.
Early this year, the zone debuted at the third edition of the PwC/NCF National U-17 Championships in Abuja and Odang, whose team facilitated entry into the zones, ensuring that the development was just the beginning.
I will say that all states in the zone develop the game at the base. The states have field officers and the reports from them are good.
Although schools are on break, some students are still able to train, although we will have more children when schools resume.
For some students and parents sport is like an escape from the sad news of uncertainty and that is where cricket comes in.
It is relatively a new sport for some of them and many are very interested in it. Since our arrival from the tournament in Abuja, many students have shown interest and it’s almost like no one wants to be left behind, Odang said.
The NCF official also called on state governments to invest in sports to engage youth and keep them off the streets.
