TTFI lists 16 probabilities for Commonwealth Games, final selection to be chosen after national camp from May 23
Reigning national champions Sharath Kamal and Sreeja Akula were named on Monday’s 16-strong likelihood list for the Birmingham Commonwealth Games to be held in July-August.
SD Mudgil, a member of the Suspended Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI) appointed committee of trustees appointed by the Delhi High Court, told PTI that the final roster will be announced after completion of the training camp from May 23 to May 30.
First up, the training camp will be held at Padukone-Dravid Center for Sports Excellence in Bengaluru.
“Following their meetings on April 25, May 1 and May 2, the selectors shortlisted the probabilities for the upcoming Commonwealth Games.
“The list became final after watching the players at the national championships in Shillong, detailed deliberations and discussions about past performances and medal prospects,” said Mudgil, who is himself a former athlete.
The CoA, led by retired Judge Gital Mittal, had taken charge in February after existing office holders were suspended by the Delhi Supreme Court over a “sorry turn of events”.
“We want to take the game to every nook and corner of the country. Our focus is also on making the administration transparent. Justice Gita Mittal has been very proactive on that front.
“The performance of our athletes has also been encouraging of late. They give us great hope to enter the CWG and the Asian Games (now postponed) and the 2024 Olympics,” Mudgil said.
Earlier this month, Indian players, including female star sailor Manika Batra, made huge gains in the ITTF world rankings after the sport’s governing body approved changes to the points system.
Manika reached a career-high singles ranking of 38 with a jump of 10 places, while G Sathiyan was the best placed Indian man at 34.
Veteran Sharath, who won his 10th national title at Shillong, also took a place to be number 37, while Sreeja Akula, who won her first national title, took a whopping 39 places to be ranked 68th. The Indian team no longer has a foreign coach since the Asian Games of 2018.
“We’re working on that too and hope to finalize it soon,” added Mudgil.
