Crisis in Sri Lanka: Cricket Australia monitor situation in island nation ahead of tour
Cricket Australia continues to monitor the situation in Sri Lanka but has no plans to change the schedule of the upcoming tour of the island nation despite ongoing violence, the governing body said Thursday.
Nine people have been killed and more than 300 injured this week in violent street protests against the government of the nation in the Indian Ocean, which is experiencing the worst economic crisis in its history.
The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) on Wednesday updated its travel advice on Sri Lanka, instructing potential visitors to reconsider their need to travel due to the security situation.
“We are closely monitoring developments in Sri Lanka and are in regular talks with DFAT and Sri Lanka Cricket,” Cricket Australia said on Thursday.
“Our players and support staff have been informed and will be kept informed. There are still three weeks until the team’s scheduled departure and at this stage there are no changes to the schedule.”
DFAT has been advising potential visitors to Pakistan since March to reconsider their travel needs, citing “the unstable security situation and the high threat of terrorist attacks, kidnappings and violence”.

The Australian test squad completed its first cricket tour of Pakistan since 1998 under “presidential” security last month. Australia last month announced three strong squads for the Sri Lanka tour, which includes a Twenty20 series, five one-day internationals and two tests in Galle. An Australian “A” team will also play four games.
Two of the T20 matches that start the tour early next month, three of the one-day internationals and two of the “A” matches are in the capital, Colombo, where the worst violence has occurred.
Cricket Australia’s security chief visited Sri Lanka last month, when a state of emergency was declared for the first time, and authorized the tour.
