Hope Rhoades continues family legacy as Holland Christian tennis claims OK Blue title
Growing up, Hope Rhoades watched both of her brothers win conference championships on number 1 singles for Holland Christian.
It’s a tough legacy to follow, and one that Rhoades didn’t do in her first year at No. 1 singles.
Now a senior in her sophomore year, Rhoades hosted an amazing OK Blue Conference tournament and claimed the No. 1 singles championship.
“It feels really good to (join my brothers Christian and Ryan). I’ve always looked up to them. I was always their little sister, but now it was Hope, not the little sister who was winning. My brother Ryan was here and he’s a conference champion, so it was cool to look up to him and (get that confidence from him),” Rhoades said. “Last year was a struggle and a shock for me. But it was kind of a warm-up year. I really wanted the title and I worked really hard. That was a milestone for me on my way to college tennis.”
Rhoades defeated Susi Uldanah of Coopersville 6-3, 6-3 in the No. 1 singles final.
“It was very hot, so I did my best to let her walk around the field as much as possible,” said Rhoades.
Rhoades promised to play at Hope College next year. Her brother Christian played there.
“I decided primary education was for me. I like the small school. I’m a homebody and I’m close to my family,” Rhoades said. “I feel so comfortable there. I’m really excited.”
Holland Christian won the tournament with 14 points. West Catholic and Spring Lake each scored 11, followed by Fruitport with eight, Hamilton and Unity Christian with five and Coopersville with two.
Coupled with the overall season records, the Maroons claimed the outright title for Spring Lake. Hamilton finished fifth.
The Maroons have won both OK Blue titles since moving from the Green.
“This means a lot. I am so proud of how well our team played,” said Eva VanKlompenberg. “Our team encourages each other very well. We are like a family. We try to give the players on the pitch the energy they need. This was quite a big (achievement) on the way to the regions.”
The Maroons had three more flying champions, including one more in singles.
At number 3 singles, VanKlompenberg won the flying championship and defeated Rachel Hines of Fruitport 6-4, 6-2 in the title match.
“I was just trying to keep her moving and make her tired,” said VanKlompenberg. “It started to get close in the first set (4-3) and I just started playing my own game. I started playing with confidence, but not with overconfidence.”
Holland Christian’s Bria Lampen reached the final at number 1 with a 6-1, 6-4 victory in the semi-final, but lost 6-1, 6-2 to Fruitport in the final.
In the doubles, Larissa Bol-Esmay Klingenberg of Holland Christian defeated West Catholic 6-3, 6-0.
The Maroons also won against No. 4 doubles when Abi Kraal-Nicole Genzink defeated Spring Lake 6-4, 6-4 in the final.
Holland Christian’s Ainsley VandenBrink-Lilly DeVries advanced to the final before losing 6-3, 6-2 to West Catholic.
At number 2 doubles, Holland Christian’s Kayla VandenBerg-Monika Diaz made the final before going to Western Catholic 6-0, 6-2 in the final.
Holland Christian’s Jenna Grotenhuis took fourth at No. 4 singles.
Hamilton’s Racquelle Burdick-Sydnay Wedeven took third place at number 2 in doubles.
