DURHAM For the 22nd time in the history of the program, the No. 4 Duke women’s tennis advances to the NCAA Team Championship Quarterfinals after defeating No. 13 Georgia 4-1 on Friday night at Ambler Tennis Stadium.

The Blue Devils will make their third appearance in the NCAA quarterfinals in the past four years. There was no NCAA tournament during the 2019-20 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Under head coach Jamie Ashworth, Duke is 8-7 in the NCAA quarterfinal round. The Blue Devils await the winner of the super-regional game between sixth-seeded NC State and 11th-seeded California, which takes place Saturday at 3 p.m. in Raleigh.

“First, congratulations to Georgia on a great year,” Ashworth said after the game. “They let us play such a physical game. I’m glad we have a few days off before we have to play again because I don’t know if we can play at a high level again tomorrow. I keep talking about some choices that our team had to make in the middle of March and they chose the more difficult route and they are now seeing the fruits of that. We couldn’t be more proud and excited to represent Duke in Champaign, Illinois next weekend.”

“A lot of resilience,” Ashworth added when asked what he saw of his team tonight. “Just a lot of faith and trust in each other.”

During Friday’s game against the Bulldogs, No. 49 Chloe Beck and Ellie Coleman started the evening by beating Mell Reasco and Dasha Vidmanova, 6-3, on doubles court two. The visitors even pulled back after beating Morgan Coppoc No. 20 and Ania Hertel No. 17 Georgia Drummy and Karolina Berankova, 6-3, on the highest field. With the colon representing the outcome on lane three, Margaryta Bilokin and Eliza Omirouc came through for Duke by beating Guillermina Grant and Meg Kowalski 6-4.

Despite leading 1-0 into singles, Georgia tied the overall game after Hertel’s 6-1, 6-3 victories over Bilokin on field five.

rookie Emma Jackson answered quickly for the Blue Devils by making quick work of Coppoc 6-0, 7-5 on lane three. Number 9 Beck then gave Duke a 3-1 lead after taking 6-3, 7-5 wins over number 17 Reasco on the main field.

The last three games of the day were forced in three sets. Luckily No. 14 Drummy found a way to come back from a 6-4 loss in the first frame to No. 99 Vidmanova on lane two to register 7-5, 6-3 wins over the last two sets and overall win for Duke to claim.

“It’s a great feeling when we’re all on the field and giving everything we’ve got,” said Senior Drummy of Duke’s 22nd win of the year. “It came down to my game at the end, but there were two other girls on the field who were still fighting and the rest of our teammates were on the sidelines, so it was just really nice that everyone was supporting each other and everything gave. .”

The matches on lanes four and six remained unfinished. no. 106 Kelly Chen and Kowalski were each tied in one set after Chen won the opening frame 6-3 and Kowalski the second, 6-2. Kowalski led the final set 5-4 when the game was halted. Coleman and Mai Nirundorn were also all squared in one set apiece. Coleman recorded a thrilling 7-6 (5) tiebreaker win in the opening frame, but dropped the second 6-4. Nirundorn led 3-2 in the third set when Duke took the finish line.

“This group really likes to play for each other and they see every day as an opportunity to be together and play together,” Ashworth said. “I know they don’t want to see that end. It’s not about the wins or the losses. For them it’s a chance to be together as a group and we took that approach and they handled it great We’re excited again in.”

The Blue Devils bring an 11-game winning streak into next weekend’s NCAA quarterfinal round, which will be against the winner of the super-regional game between sixth-seeded NC State and 11th-seeded California.

The final three rounds of the tournament will be held at the Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex in Champaign, Illinois, with the opportunity to compete for the national championship on May 20-22. The event is hosted by the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Duke defeated NC State on April 1 (4-3), recovering from a 3-1 deficit to improve to all-time 62-2 against the Wolfpack. The Blue Devils also have an all-time 10-2 ledger against Cal, but the two teams haven’t played each other in eight years. Duke won the final match on February 9, 2014, 4-2.
