Next UM event: Saturday 14 May (Big Ten Championships day two)

MINNEAPOLIS, Min. — Distance runner Tom Brady posted a top-five finish to close out the University of Michigan men’s and field team’s first day of competition at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships in Minnesota on Friday (May 13).

Brady continued a late rise to finish fifth in the finals of the 10,000-meter day at the University of Minnesota’s Outdoor Track and Field Stadium, crossing the line in 29:09.53 and earning four points for Michigan in the team standings .

The points came in Michigan’s only track final of the day, taking the Wolverines in seventh place overall. On Saturday, a number of scoring opportunities will arise, with a large part of the scoring taking place on Sunday.

Brady hovered in the middle of the leading pack for the first two thirds of the race. As a leading group of three took over, Brady persisted in a chase that saw as many as seven men battling for five goals.

Brady was seventh with 800m to go, made a move and came through at the bell in fourth, although he would eventually fall to fifth.

The time is almost identical to the feat of 29:10.41 a year ago, which earned him a silver medal. It will also put him on the bubble of qualification for the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds, reserved for the top 48 people in each event in the NCAA East Region.

Friday’s session also included qualifying rounds in other circuit events.

Running in the same qualifying heat of the 1,500 meters, 2021 finalists Nick Foster and Tom Dodd took the return journey to Sunday’s 2022 final with automatic berths thanks to the top three finishes in their race. The top three proved to be a difficult feat as the top four finishers were all only 0.28 seconds apart.

After mixed turns at the front in the fairly fast race, it was the fastest of the three qualifying heats. Foster and Dodd came out of the final corner in a pack of four competing for three guaranteed automatic berths. Foster was knocked out by 0.006 second for the win in 3:45.05, but still finished second, and Dodd took third by 0.08 second in 3:45.25.

The Wolverines almost got a third qualifier for the 1,500-meter final in Will Landowne, who was beaten to the line by 0.14 seconds in 3:52.32 for third and last place in his heat. His time was not fast enough to earn a wide spot for the final.

After failing to complete his lone attempt at the decathlon earlier this year, the returning scorer Mason Mahacek is in a strong position after the first five events of the 10-event, two-day competition. With 3,834 points, he is just nine points away from fourth place and 66 behind former Michigan State teammate Heath BaIdwin for third.

Mahacek got off to a fast start with a career-best 10.94 (+1.8 meters per second.) [m/s] wind), and followed with a solid 6.44 m (21-1.5, +1.1 m/s) in the long jump. He was within a foot of his career best in the shot put with a mark of 12.48 m (40-11.5) and made a strong high jump at 2.00 m (6-6.75). He finished the day clocking 49.51 at 400 meters, third best in the field.

The second day of the Big Ten Championships kicks off Saturday at 10 a.m. CT as Mahacek resumes action in the decathlon. The first field event is at 2:30 PM with the shot put and the track session starts at 4:15 PM

View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price. Using brokerage websites will allow drivers to get quotes from multiple insurers, thus making the comparison faster and easier.
