Bayley takes gold in Slovenia – British Para Table Tennis

In his first international tournament since winning two silver medals at the Paralympic Games in Tokyo last year, Will Bayley marked his return by winning the men’s class 7 singles title today at the Slovenia Para Open in Lasko. With all the leading nations competing here except China, it was the strongest tournament this year outside of the World Championships and Fliss Pickard (Women’s Class 6), Tom Matthews (Men’s Class 1), Jack Hunter-Spivey (Men’s Class 5), Martin Perry (Men’s Class 6 ) and Aaron McKibbin (men’s class 8) all took bronze in their respective singles events.

Bayley has had some great battles with Jordi Morales over the years, including a five-set epic at the 2018 World Championships that the 37-year-old Spaniard won before taking the title. Bayley started their semifinals well today, leading 2-0, but Morales is a great competitor and took the third 11-5. Bayley then raced to a 10-4 lead in the fourth, but as match points came and went, coach Greg Baker called a timeout at 10-7 and Bayley took the set 11-8 and the game 3-1 when Morales his service return sent long.

That brought him through to the final where he faced Chalermpong Punpoo from Thailand. They last met in Tokyo, when Bayley won in three close sets, and the Asian Championship bronze medalist got off to a flying start, taking a 7-2 lead in the first set. Bayley went on to win seven consecutive points to take the set 11-9 and always in control from that point on, taking the second 11-5 and the third 11-5 for a 3-0 win.

I started out pretty slow, Bayley admitted, but I have to give him credit because he started out really fast and smart and I expected that to be honest. At 7-2 down, I told myself that his serve is long and I must try to attack or else he will come on top of me. I don’t want to lose because someone goes to me and I just don’t show anything so I knew I had to try and attack. Luckily I won that set and I think that was a huge momentum for me and I was solid for the rest of the match.

I’m really happy with the way I played in this tournament. It’s been tough mentally because we’ve gone from doubles to singles and doubles to singles and it’s mentally tough and exhausting, but I’m really glad I kept it together. Every tournament is hard to win now, so I’m proud to win this tournament. It’s not easy and I’m fighting and working as hard as I can so I’m really proud and I have to enjoy it and celebrate a bit because you never know how many tournaments you’ll win.

Rio’s Paralympic champion celebrated by holding up the shirt given to him yesterday by three-time World and Paralympic champion Jochen Wollmert after they lost in the quarterfinals of the men’s doubles in what will be one of the last German tournaments before he met retires.

He’s my hero and I wanted to win for him, Bayley said. I learned so much playing the doubles with him – I learned so much about my own game and how to play tactics. He talks to me about table tennis and he has so much knowledge and I wanted to do it today in honor of him because he is the best player in history and I want everyone to remember him and know how good he was. I’m really passionate about that because he was incredible.

Men’s class 1

Matthews got off to a slow start against World Champion Kim Hyeon Uk of Korea, who won the first set comfortably 11-3, but the Welshman was much more competitive after that and the next two sets were close, although the world number two and the silver Paralympic medalist from Korea them both 11-8, 11-9 for a 3-0 win.

I’m glad I got stronger as the match went on, Matthews said, but you can’t give cheap sets and the first set I actually gave to him and he took advantage so that’s why I have to go back to the drawing board and work on some things before I met him again. I will take a few things out of the game and come back stronger. Overall I’m pretty happy with the tournament, it’s one of the strongest Para events of the year so I’m happy to have made it to the semi-finals, but of course disappointed to lose. I will go back to training and try to beat him again in another competition.

Men’s class 5

Jack Hunter-Spivey took on world number two and 2014 world champion Valentin Baus in his semifinal. The two met in Tokyo last year when the German won in three sets en route to the Paralympic title, but today it was much closer. Hunter-Spivey came back from 10-8 to win the first set 12-10, but Baus made it 1-1 and then took the second 11-6 before finishing the fourth set 11-6 and the game 3- 1 won.

I had a strong start, but Baus is Paralympic champion and a quality player, said Hunter-Spivey. I didn’t feel like I was at my best level today, there were some casual mistakes and I didn’t execute my tactics the way I wanted, but it’s all a learning experience and a process. It’s always great to make it to the semi-finals of a major league and I was disappointed with the loss, but now I have to push on and see what I can improve on. I enjoyed this week. I’ve been able to get wins and I’m happy to see I still have that after not competing for a while. I play table tennis to win matches and get that feeling of winning matches on big points. I’ve had that feeling this week and hopefully I’ll have to take that to the World Championships and the Commonwealth Games, which would be a great experience for me.

Men’s class 6

Martin Perry had not taken a set from Rungroj Thainiyom in seven previous encounters and the world number three from Thailand comfortably took the first two sets in their semi-final today. But Perry has found a new level in this tournament and kept himself in the game with great play, saving two match points at 10-8 before taking the set 12-10. From 5-1 in the fourth he fought his way back to 7-7, but the 2012 London Paralympic champion used all his experience to move forward and took the set 11-7 and the game 3-1 when Perry made his comeback in the net.

That’s the closest I’ve ever taken him, Perry said. He is a previous Paralympic champion and number three in the world, but I felt I was in the game. He took the first set quite easily, but after that I felt it was pretty tight and could have gone either way. If I’d just had a better start in the fourth set from 5-1 down it went to 7-7 so I got a little momentum and if I’d managed to get that set it could have been a different story. I’ve pretty much played all of the top 10 now and I feel like I can really compete with them and win, which is the most important thing. Obviously I’m sorry to lose but I’ve proven myself with the tournament I’ve been in and the matches I’ve been in that have been tight and that’s something that builds character and experience that I can do in the future use. It was a good tournament for me and a lot of positives, the only negative was that I didn’t make the final.

Men’s class 8

In his semi-final, Aaron McKibbin faced the world number two, Ukraine’s Viktor Didukh, for the first time since Tokyo, when he had pushed the four-time European champions despite a 3-1 defeat. The pair have had some close matches in the past, but Didukh had a 16-0 win/loss record against the 30-year-old Londoner and he was at his ruthless best today winning in straight sets.

It was tough, McKibbin said. He’s a very good player and very smart and I couldn’t find my rhythm against him to be honest. I was really confident because in Tokyo I pushed him really hard and I suggested my chances based on how the tournament has gone so far, but it was one of those days against him. He’s a top player and he doesn’t give you many chances – you have to work for everything and if you struggle to find your rhythm it will always be difficult against him. I’m happy to have made it to the semi-finals and it’s probably the strongest tournament of the year apart from the World Championships, so I’m really happy to be able to go into the next tournament in Montenegro so I can keep this up. This is the confidence boost I needed because I’m number five in the world, but I haven’t really played in big games in the stages I should be for my rankings, so it’s nice to get to that level. A good two week training in England now on to Montenegro and hopefully I can repeat it there.

Women’s class 6

After some stellar performances this week, Fliss Pickard couldn’t put her best foot down against Stephanie Grebe, the bronze medalist of the World and Paralympic games, and although she fought hard, the world’s number four German was always just ahead in a 3-0 win.

I was very disappointed with my performance, Pickard said. I felt like I let her take charge and dictate the game, but again, it’s just another learning experience and I’ll get stronger for next time. I’m definitely getting closer to the top players and I’ve made progress this tournament, although I feel like I haven’t shown the level yet, but I think that will come with confidence. If I keep playing tournaments and playing matches, I think the level will come.
