The 6-foot-7, 290-pound Absher is a two-time conference performer. He was part of an offensive line that allowed Red Raider backs to rack up 3,973 yards in 2021. South Point advanced to the 3A West Finals, where it fell to eventual state champion Dudley.
Absher chose Notre Dame over Clemson and NC State. Others of interest included Appalachian State, Coastal Carolina, Duke, East Carolina, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Michigan State, North Carolina, Penn State, Stanford, Tennessee, Virginia Tech, and Wake Forest.
Notre Dame extended an offer to Absher on October 21, 2021. The Fighting Irish was then under coach Brian Kelly. However, his interest in attending Notre Dame only started when Marcus Freeman replaced Kelly, who was hired by LSU in December.
I probably wouldn’t commit to Notre Dame if it were the old coaching staff. Nothing against those boys, Absher said. Coach Freeman and the new staff are a perfect fit for Notre Dame. They bring in a rejuvenated, more youthful typing program. And that’s exactly what I was looking for.
Freeman also scored points in January when he visited Belmont School.
It meant a lot, Absher said. He was one of two or three coaches that came, and since it’s all the way into Notre Dame and Indiana, it’s not Clemson or Chapel Hill where you can drive two hours down (Interstate 85). But he has to get on the plane, get his staff ready, but it meant a lot.
(My first reaction was) Notre Dame, are you sure? Do they want to see me? It meant a lot, it showed that I meant a lot to them.
Belmont is located over 700 miles south of South Bend. However, the distance from home did not weigh too heavily in the decision.
It was the training and how comfortable he was with the coaching staff recruiting him, said Chris Absher, Sullivan’s father. You are with these people seven days a week, 24 hours a day. They are in fact your guardians. You have to feel comfortable with your surroundings and with everything we were looking for in a school.
Notre Dames enrollment is about 8,500, compared to tens of thousands at NC State. There is no Greek life, no fraternities or sororities, you can take that out of the equation. And once you’re on campus, it’s just a special place.
