Pueblo Central’s Guzman Has the Best Finish at the Girls’ State Tennis Tournament
Isabella Guzman put in an amazing performance at the Class 3A State High School Girls Tennis Championships at Memorial Park in Colorado Springs.
The Pueblo Central freshman played at No. 3 singles, winning her first two games to reach the semifinals before falling. She also won back a challenge and played for third in her standings.
In a freshman game on Saturday morning, Sydney Lewis from Peak to Peak defeated Guzman for third place 6-1, 6-0. Guzman finished fourth, quite an achievement for her first appearance on the state.
“No, I didn’t think I’d make it this far,” says Guzman, who also plays softball, basketball, and volleyball. “I’ve had good coaching. I really wanted it. It feels good, exciting, really happy with it. A bit surprised.”

She said the experience will get her started in her high school career.
“The experience and higher competition will help me. I’m glad I got the chance to live the experience because I’ll be ready next time.”

Guzman led the Class 3A, Region 7 Wildcats to 10th in the team standings.

Central’s No. 2 singles player Dannielle DeYoung won her first round match, as did the Wildcats’ No. 1 doubles team, Trinity Saenz and Marin Munoz. Both were beaten in their second round matches.
Both of Pueblo County’s No. 3 and No. 4 doubles teams were defeated in the first round on Thursday. Emily Olonnia and Makala Martinez fell to No. 3 doubles, and Ornilla Azar and RoxieValentine lost in the first round.
In the Class 4A state tournament on the tennis courts of Pueblo’s City Park, only two Pueblo doubles teams won matches.
At No. 1 in doubles, the Centennial tandem of Jenna Lewis and Quincy Nakaguma won their opening round match on Thursday.
And at number 4 double, Pueblo West’s team of Olivia Day and Makenna McGraw won their opening round match on Thursday.
Both teams dropped their games in the second round and failed to progress.
The Cyclones came in as the Class 4A Region 7 champions.
