Negaunee Miners boys tennis team reaches every final at Kingsford Invite, then dominates Westwood in dual | News, Sports, Jobs

KINGSFORD — Some of the top boys’ tennis teams in the Upper Peninsula met on Saturday at the Kingsford Invitational, with Escanaba beating Negaunee for the championship.

The Eskymos and Miners went on to compete for the championship on all eight flights – four singles and four doubles – and Escanaba won seven to rack up 46 points.

The Miners won number 3 singles with sophomore Tyler Lajimodiere, and adding their seven runner-up finishes, totaling 34 points.

“Everyone was able to reach the first part of our goal by reaching the final, but once there we didn’t play at the level we did against Escanaba on Thursday,” Negaunee head coach Kyle Saari said, referring to a double home game against the Eskymos two days earlier, where the miners led 4-3 before being called by the rain.

“We need to keep things simple, and that requires patience within the points to grind it out and avoid forcing things that aren’t there. We will use it as a good learning experience and that will be the focus this week.

“Tyler Lajimodiere was such a nice surprise for us this year. He caught on quickly as a joint venture last year and fits seamlessly into our singles lineup. He earned his championship today.”

Saari confirmed that the runner-up in singles was #1 Luke Syrjala, #2 Gavin Saunders and #4 Mick Kumpula; and in doubles, No. 1 James Thomson and Jace Turri, No. 2 Gavin Downey and Bryce Storms, No. 3 Gavin Jacobson and Zack Brundage and No. 4 Carter Piziali and Brandon Borlace.

Scores and names of Escanaba opponents were not available.

“Zack Brundage and Gavin Jacobson also played some of their best tennis (Saturday)”, said Sarah. “They are both eager to get started, and some things clicked for them… in their last game.

“We are excited about the opportunities and challenges ahead. Every flight has something to work towards and that can help us stay focused.”

Three teams from the Kingsford area took the next team spots in the standings as Iron Mountain finished with 19 points, host nation Flivvers 16 and West Iron County 12. Menominee failed to score.

The Mountaineers won all four games for third place in singles with David Juul at number 1, Brenden LaPoint at number 2, Kaden Sheldon at number 3, and Kurt Adiao Ryan at number 4.

Negaunee 8, Westwood 0

On Monday in Westwood, the Miners picked up the weekend tournament right away by dominating the Patriots. In fact, outside of the No. 1 doubles, Negaunee lost just 10 games in those seven games.

But at No. 1, miners James Thomson and Jace Turri had a hard-fought match before winning 7-5, 6-3 against Westwood’s Chase Prophet and Ryan LaFountain.

“It took James and Jace a bit to get rolling, but they ended up with four clean games after being 2-3 behind,” said Sarah. “They played smart and kept it simple in the second set, which is a big focus this week.”

Patriots head coach Sarah Massie was also happy with her top double tandem.

“We knew going into today that Negaunee is a tough team,” said Massie. “Playing strong teams is what helps us get better.

“Ryan LaFountain and Chase Prophet played a great match at number 1 in doubles. They’re playing well together now that we’re about halfway through our season.”

The next closest match came at No. 3 doubles, where miners Gavin Jacobson and Zack Brundage beat Pats’ John Thomsen and Tristan Miller 6-1, 6-3.

Saturday’s champion, Lajimodiere, continued his fine game and scored a 6-0, 6-0 shutout on Monday.

On number 1 basehits, Luke Syrjala van Negaunee won 6-1, 6-0 vs. Andrew Niemi van Westwood.

And the Negaunee coach also selected the game of the number 4 doubles pair of Carter Piziali and Brandon Borlace, who took a 6-1, 6-0 win over WHS’ Jayce Patron and Mitchell Ford.

“Carter and Brandon continue to give us a lot of consistency”, said Sarah. “Both styles complement each other well.”

Negaunee improved to 8-1, while the Patriots fell to 5-4. The miners will receive Iron Mountain at 4 p.m. today.

Marquette 4, Escanaba 4

On Monday in Marquette, the Redmen nearly took the upset of Saturday’s Kingsford Invite champion, splitting 2-2 in both singles and doubles, with MSHS having the upper hand in the top two singles flights and Esky winning the top two doubles matches.

“Escanaba is a very good tennis team, well coached,” Marquette head coach Karl Thomsen said. “So I’m really proud of the way our Marquette players fought with them today.”

“I think Nick Olivier set the tone for number 1 singles. Nick hit the ball really clean today leading to a nice win over a really solid opponent.

“Our number 3 doubles team of Liam McFarren and Isaac Johnson showed a lot of growth today as they scrapped for a nice win from behind.

“The number 3 doubles and the number 2 singles were the co-matches of the day.

“On number 2 singles, (Marquette’s) Matthew Barsch and (Escanaba’s) Nate Howes had incredible point after point. In the end Matt Barsch claimed the win and got the support of his teammates to increase his energy in the third set.

“As a coach, I love our progress, but I also understand that there are a lot of little things that we need to clean up.”

Olivier recorded a 6-0, 6-1 victory over the Eskymos’ Gunner Dlugas; Barsch took a three-set victory, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, over Howes; and McFarren and Johnson also needed three sets before beating EHS’ Troy Delvaux and Evan St. Peter 0-6, 6-4, 7-5.

All other matches were over two sets, including the Redmen No. 4 doubles teaming of Toby Camilli and Seppi Camilli who won 6-4, 6-4 against Esky’s Parker Laford and Andrew Lord.

Marquette will receive West Iron County at 3:30 p.m. today and travel to Westwood around the same time on Thursday.
