No. 14 Auburn Ready For Winner-Take-All Game Three At No. 3 Oregon State

CORVALLIS, Or. No. 14 Auburn brought in the potential tying run in the bottom of the ninth, but No. 3 Oregon State continued to beat the Tigers 4-3 on Sunday in game two of the Corvallis Super Regional, turning in a decisive third game on Monday.

“I thought the guys were still fighting,” Auburn coach Butch Thompson said. “Just a great baseball game in college. We’ll be back tomorrow.’

Looking for his third hit of the game, Brooks Carlson hit a sharp hit to first base for the first out, then Brody Moore flew to the warning lane before a called third strike ended the game.

The Tigers were within striking distance thanks to a perfect throw from rightfielder Bobby Peircea to get Matthew Gretler as he tries to score on Justin Boyd’s third hit of the night.

“We’ve been fighting to keep the game close,” Thompson said. “Bobby has a great arm. He attacked the piece.’

maroon catcher Nate LaRue threw Boyd out trying to steal after he led off the game with a single.

“Right out of the race he was tested,” Thompson said. “I thought his arm made an impression.”

Oregon State, the visiting team in game two, took a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth on solo home runs by Jacob Melton and Travis Bazzana. Maroon Outfielders Mike Bello and Kason Howell Made highlight reel catches to limit damage.

“They made great plays,” Thompson said. “We’ve seen it for most of the year. We had to stick with it to keep it close.”

Auburn answered immediately with three doubles in the bottom of the fourth of Cole FosterCarlson and Moore.

“At least for the second time we answered,” Thompson said. “I thought that was big in the ball game.”

Foster registered Auburn’s first goal of the game off Oregon State ace Cooper Hjerpe, reaching third place on Sonny DiChiaras grounder and score on a wild pitch for the Tigers’ first run. Carlson doubled with two outs and scored on Moore’s two-bagger for a 2-2 tie.

“We’ve made our adjustments,” Carlson said. “He had a pretty efficient fastball. We got a few runs in the end and tried to fight it out.”

Oregon State re-took the lead in the top of the fifth when Gretler led off with a single, moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a throwing error.

The Beavers added another run to a 4-2 lead in the sixth on Jake Dukart’s RBI single that scored Bazzana, who walked, stole second and advanced to third base on a throwing error.

Auburn narrowed the deficit to 4-3 in the sixth after Peirce walked a two-out walk to end Hjerpe’s evening, moved to third base on Carlson’s single and scored on a wild pitch.

Hjerpe improved to 11-2, struckout six and gave up three hits.

LaRue’s single in the seventh inning turned out to be Auburn’s last hit when Oregon State reliever Ben Ferrer retired the last eight batters of the Tigers to earn his third save.

Joseph Gonzalez (7-3) recorded the loss, struckout five in five innings and gave up two earned runs.

Chase AllsupChase Isbell and John Armstrong combined to pitch the last four innings with Isbell throwing 2.2 scoreless innings and striking out four to keep Auburn close.

With a trip to Omaha on the horizon, the Tigers and Beavers will face off in game three on ESPN2 and the Auburn Sports Network Monday at 6:30 p.m. CT.
