MIDDLETOWN The Championship matches are scheduled for Championship Sunday at the Wins Filipek Sr. Memorial Tennis Tournament.
The Filipek, in his 18th year, is also in his senior year. Prior to the start of this year’s event, Tournament Director Wint Filipek Jr. that this would be the last.
Today, starting at 9 a.m. on the courts of Wesleyan University, 21 division champions will be crowned.
There are actually 23 games scheduled for Championship Sunday. There are still semi-finals to be played in the Men’s B Doubles Division for players with a combined age of less than 100 years.
The matchup takes place in all other divisions, including in Mens A Singles, where Jonathan Lippert meets Brook Hazelton.
After terrifying each other, Lippert and Hazelton join forces to take on John Holschlag and Jason Sucoll in the Mens A Doubles final.
The Womens A Singles final features a very familiar face: Wallingford three-time Record-Journal Girls Tennis Player of the Year Justine Hoover. Hoover, who played at Sheehan and then Endicott College, will face Maria Negron for the crown.
It is one of two titles Negron has played today. She and Brian Bucknam will face Rostyk Datsko and Varsha Rathore in the Mixed A Doubles final.
Rathore will appear in the Womens A Doubles final where she will team up with Lavanya Rathore against Caitlin Sze and Lejla Guster.
The B divisions are subdivided by age from 50 for singles, out of a combined 100 for doubles.
Eric Henne vs. Richard Samarawickrama is the championship match in the men’s B Singles sub-50 set. Craig Calistro takes on Errol Williams in the final of 50 and above.
The Womens B Singles Finals: Megan Fitzgerald vs. Liese Sippel (sub-50) and Opal Bravo vs. Lori Brown (50+).
While the Mens B Doubles have yet to settle the last four under 100, the teams of Chip Marchand/Paul Malafronte and Kenyon Clark/Ray Bucknam are ready to tango in the 100-plus final.
Among the B division sub-50 women, Liese Sippel, depending on how she fares in her 9am showdown in singles with Megan Fitzgerald, could be on the hunt for a sweep. Shes teamed up with Janet Baron against Jennifer Persio/Tina Rivera in the sub-100 B doubles final.
Baron also made it to the Mixed B Doubles (sub-100) final with Rick Samarawickrama. They will face Angelo and Madison Rossetti.
The 100-plus B Division doubles final features Sandi Mauro/Susan Anderson vs. Connie Hurtt/Laurie Zrenda in the Womens series and Don Hoover/Lynn Siebert vs. Philip/Angela Goetz in the Mixed.
There are also five C Division Championship matches, one of which features recent Maloney stars Haley and Abby Lespier. The twins have reached the final of the Women’s C Doubles and will face Anja Josef and Asya Tarabar.
Josef will be out of a match with Karen Ligammari in the Womens C Singles final.
It’s the same scenario for Andrew Hopkinson in the final of Mens C. Hopkinson takes on Gautham Santhanam in singles, then pairs with Kayo Nierbryoski to face Zachary and Benjamin Parente in doubles.
Mixed C Doubles sees Jack and Bobbie Dise duel Roxanne Kilpatrick and Don Ouellette.
One of the final matches of the day, and thus one of the last in tournament history, will be the most gripping. It’s in the Win Sr. Division and Wins Filipek Jr. The tournament director, who created this event nearly 20 years ago in memory of his late father, will play with Mike Flannery for the division title against Jim Quinn and Bruce Fiermonte.
