Second seed Anett Kontaveit dropped out of Wimbledon in the second round on Wednesday, beating Jule Niemeier 6-4, 6-0 with a big helping, marking her first appearance at the championships.
Unable to withstand the German’s massive blows, 26-year-old Kontaveit looked increasingly dejected as she failed to find her reach on a sunny No. 1 track.
Estonian Kontaveit has spoken of fatigue this year following a COVID-19 infection and has not played a game since the French Open last month, where she was defeated in the first round.

She didn’t look good against Niemeier, shooting bases long and wide and making 24 unforced errors in a match that lasted 58 minutes.
Niemeier, 22, and 97 in the world after injury problems disrupted her early progress on the tour, jumped and slammed into the air when Kontaveit hit the net again at the match point.
“It’s great,” she told an appreciative luncheon audience. “It’s one of the biggest wins of my career so far.”
Niemeier said she was nervous before the competition on a show court. “But I like to play on grass… it suits my game.”
She plays either Ukrainian Lesia Tsurenko who defeated compatriot Anhelina Kalinina 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.

Both players had talked about the thrill of pursuing their careers after the Russian invasion of their country and Tsurenko wore a yellow and blue ribbon on her white top.
Kalinina, the 29th who described Monday how her family home had been damaged by Russian shelling, chose not to follow suit.
Tsurenko, 33, used her extra experience to beat her opponent and advance to the third round against Germany’s Jule Niemeier, beating second-seeded Anett Kontaveit.
Reaching the third round this year is worth £90,000 ($109,000) and Tsurenko is donating 10 percent of her prize money to help her fellow Ukrainians affected by the war.
She is the last Ukrainian player to remain in singles after Marta Kostyuk was eliminated by Zhang Shuai.
