US Open: Venus Williams and Naomi Osaka suffer first round defeats | tennis news

Venus Williams kept her thoughts about her tennis future to herself after losing in the opening round of the US Open.

The 42-year-old is now lower at 1,504 and has won just one game since the Australian Open in January 2021, but she declined to say whether she will be following sister Serena after this tournament.

The broadcasters had been informed that there would be a ceremony on the track after Venus’ match against Belgian Alison Van Uytvanck, but after losing 6-1 7-6 (5), the American quickly grabbed her bag and walked the Arthur Ashe Stadium out.

Asked about her future after that, the six-time Grand Slam singles champion said: “Right now I’m only focused on doubles.”

The sisters will play doubles together in a grand slam for the first time since 2018, with Serena making the most of her farewell event.

Together, they have won 14 slam titles and have won every final they’ve contested, and Venus said she’s looking forward to pairing up with her sister again.

“It was Serena’s idea,” she said.

“She’s the boss, so I do what she tells me to do.

“We’ve had some great wins. It would be nice to add some more.”

Serena was honored in an electric atmosphere before and after her first round win over Danka Kovinic on Monday night.

“I’ve definitely seen it,” Williams said.

“I would have liked to have been there, but I clearly had an early start today.

“It’s never easy the first round. It was certainly an exciting night. It’s clear that I hope there is more in store for her in this tournament.

“We have a huge influence on each other and I have a huge influence on her.

“For me, I just felt like my role is to make sure I don’t influence her in any way, and that this decision should be all hers and her family’s. The newest part of the family.

“I think she’s had some time to process it, and she’s doing it the way she wants to. That’s the most important thing, doing things on her own terms.”

The day ended with the first round meeting between four-time grand slam champions Naomi Osaka and 19th seed and finalist of the Australian Open Danielle Collins.

Osaka has struggled for form and fitness this year and this was another low point as she lost 7-6 (5) 6-3 for the first time in the first round in New York.
