St. Louis Armory complex reopened as entertainment center
A $60 million entertainment venue that developers say will be the largest indoor entertainment attraction in St. Louis will open Dec. 9.
the armory will fill 250,000 square feet in a Historic Midtown Building which in 1938 housed the 138th Infantry Division of the Missouri National Guard and later was the site of the St. Louis Tennis Club.
Visitors will have the chance to enjoy food, drink and live music in a sprawling space that will include five additional event venues next spring. The complex will also include a St. Louis Tennis Hall of Fame.
Hopefully, when done right, it’s probably the biggest attraction in the region outside the Cardinals stadium. We have the space and the program to achieve this, said Jake Miller of Brick + Bev, who runs Armorys programming.
Brick + Bev is a newly formed division of Green Street Real Estate Ventures, who is behind the project. The company has redeveloped several industrial sites for new uses, including the Dorris Gear Co. plant, which it converted into a business park, and an abandoned machine shop it converted into Rockwell Beer Co.
The Armory will employ 400 people when fully built. Many of the positions will be part-time, but will require 30 or more hours of work per week.
The historic building is located on Market Street off Interstate 70, a short walk from City Foundry STLthe $300 million redevelopment by Steve Smiths Lawrence Group to include a dining hall plus office and retail space.
Green Street Real Estate Ventures leaders planned to convert the Armory building into office space, president and CEO Philip G. Hulse said, but those plans failed after potential prime tenant We Work signed a contract. failed IPO in 2019.
Instead, the building will be the centerpiece of an up-and-coming entertainment district that stretches across Grand Boulevard to Vanderventer Street, Hulse said.
We bought everything along that path and were going to breathe new life into this mixed-use entertainment district that will literally draw millions of people to the city, Hulse said. This is a building that everyone drives past every day, that has stood still for a bit, waiting to be reborn.
The Armory will feature a two-story slide, one of the largest video screens in the city, and equipment for dozens of games, including badminton, table tennis and horseshoes. Local cover bands will perform on weekends, and a 60-foot stage accommodates occasional concerts by national acts. In concert configuration, the space has an audience capacity of 5,000.
The next phase of development will open in February.
