UVA football tailgating and attendance needs improvement

UVA football tailgating and attendance needs improvement

Back in August, we published an incredibly in-depth breakdown of the tailgating recipe for every Virginia Cavaliers home game this fall. Today we took an in-depth look at tailgating for UVA football games, the experience and struggles of trying to tailgate in Charlottesville, and what it all means for Virginia’s presence at the games themselves.

For 2007 alum and former season ticket holder Kyle Matous, tailgating offers a special opportunity to stay connected to his alma affair. My favorite part of tailgating is the UVA community, he says. Since Scott Stadium is located on Grounds and Grounds is quite small, it is easy to walk from place to place and see everyone you want to see pretty quickly. Plus, fall days on Grounds are hard to beat.

Those sentiments are shared by local and current Charlottesville UVA student Colin Davis, who grew up tailgating and attending Virginia games with his family. I enjoy tailgating at UVA because it’s a family tradition of mine and it’s a great way to connect with my community and the UVA fan base, he notes, adding that my family grew up with complete strangers just because of the fact that we were in Section 120 together and they ended up being some of our best family friends.

He goes on to emphasize that now that I’m going to UVA, it’s much more special for me to be able to celebrate one of my favorite things about college with the people I’m closest to.

Still, both diehard Wahoo fans admit there’s still a lot of room for improvement with regard to tailgating and attending football games.

What’s holding back our tailgating experience is that the UVA community isn’t flocking to the games, Matous says. Saturdays in Charlottesville lack the buzz our team deserves and that is what is needed to get the program going where we want it to go.

The facts match what the 2007 alum says. Attending Virginia’s football games is far from ideal. Looking at the 2021 season, the highest percentage of capacity achieved at Scott Stadium was 79% with 48,584 people showing up to watch the UVA kick-off against Notre Dame.

In addition, of the seven home games in 2021, three games had less than 70% attendances with the games against Illinois (59%, 36,036). Wake Forest (63%, 38,699) and Duke (63%, 38,489) each have pretty meager impressions from the UVA community. Overall, UVA’s average attendance was 42,439, or 69.2%, in 2021. That’s 5,424 fewer people per game than UVA had in 2019 when the Hoos won the ACC Coastal, beating Virginia Tech for the first time since 2003, and reached the Orange Bowl.

While attendance figures from the Old Dominion’s win have not yet been released, 41,222 people attended Virginias 2022 season opener, accounting for a 67% turnout for the Tony Elliott-era first game.

Long story short, the state of attending UVA football games is not great.

Still, tailgating could play a part in complementing the relatively meager showings Scott Stadium has become accustomed to. According to Davis, turnout could be boosted if tailgating was made easier for fans who can’t afford to pay for parking tickets at the stadium.

Honestly, there should be shuttles and a shuttle route for people standing behind the John Paul Jones Arena, he says. If you were to make sure that the people who care about you the most and who can’t afford a tailgate in the stadium are furthest away, at least level the playing field by not letting them run from JPJ (that’s 1 .1 mile walk) to the stadium.

The logistics of tailgating games have long been riddled with complaints for dedicated Wahoo fans who want a more centralized space and Davis makes a valid point regarding the difficulties of enjoying what tailgating can be at its best. Tailgating on Grounds is almost literally a mile wide and an inch deep with fans scattered across various random areas.

Fortunately, UVA has made an effort to make the experience more enjoyable for fans. Elliott founding the Wahoo Walk is a fun addition to the pregame festivities, while there are typically kid-friendly events at the Aquatic and Fitness Center across the street from Scott Stadium.

All in all, tailgating is a special part of being a college football fan. A day out is worth taking UVA football home games and the tailgating experiences are great that can bring family, friends and strangers together to support the Wahoos. But both the UVA community and the school itself should continue to embrace tailgating as an event and something worthwhile to take this Virginia football program to the next level, both from a performance and attendance standpoint.
