Field hockey experiences major upset as Tigers fall to No. 60 Lafayette

The Princeton Tigers (54, 10 Ivy) lost their fourth game of the season to the Lafayette Leopards (37 overall, 02 Patriot) last Sunday, September 25 at their own Bedford field. The huge disappointment ended in overtime for the Tigers for the third time this season.

Both teams took their time to settle into the game and played tight defense in the first few minutes. Lafayette almost broke through in minute six of the game, with a corner shot that gave them the chance to score. Junior goalkeeper Robyn Thompson, however, was able to make her first of many great saves throughout the match.

After 10 minutes of play, Princeton appeared to be making progress and spending more time in their attacking area; first-year striker Talia Schenck made tactical stops, which resulted in several substitutions. Princeton continued to put pressure on the Leopard defense and pulled a corner with three minutes to go. This momentum carried through the remainder of the first period and with 45 seconds to go, senior midfielder Zoe Shephard scored a goal with an assist from sophomore midfielder Beth Yeager, ending the period with a score of 10 for the Tigers.

The second period started with senior defenseman Hannah Davey driving the Tigers on the attack and senior defenseman Gabby Andretta leading the Princeton defense. Lafayette also had many good scoring opportunities, but only came into being in the second half. Despite the Tigers beating the Leopards 91 in the first half, the score remained 10.

Both teams turned up the heat in the second half as Davey Princeton continued to drive toward the Lafayette goal. However, five minutes into the third period, Lafayette began to rush into Princeton’s defense and a Leopards defender was able to make contact with the back of the net, making the score 11. Immediately after, the Tigers were ready to fight back. on violation. Princeton played aggressively, sending passes down the sidelines to create chances in the circle.

With four minutes left in the period, Princeton pulled five straight corners. The third caused a shock when Princeton fired a successful shot at the same time as the whistle, which resulted in a video review of the game. The call on the field was; the goal would not count. During the next two corners, Tigers’ shots didn’t find the target. The fifth and final corner was also requested for video review and did not result in a goal.

The score was tied at 11 going into the final period, with both teams eager to see results. Three minutes later, Thompson made an impressive save on a corner shot from the Leopards. Players from both sides became more physical and three minutes later the first penalty of the game was awarded to a Lafayette player. After another three minutes, Lafayette was again awarded a penalty. Princeton continued to drive into the circle as senior striker Sammy Popper pushed toward Lafayette.

The closing minutes of regular play were filled with action, starting with Yeager drawing a penalty for Princeton. Junior defender Sam Davidson took the shot for the Tigers, who launched them into the top left corner of goal, making the score 21 with just three minutes to go.

Lafayette was not ready to give up, however; just nine seconds later they were queuing for their own corner. The Leopards scored and the game was again tied at 22 with just two minutes left of the fourth period. Neither team was able to finish the game and the Tigers again played overtime.

Two minutes later, Andretta was awarded a penalty and the Tigers played six on seven for two hard-fought minutes. Princeton was able to stop Lafayette and Davey made multiple attempts to find a shot. But their strong defense and the excellent performance of the Leopards goalkeeper prevented the Tigers from scoring. After five minutes, Lafayette got a corner and a chance to score. A perfectly executed move sent the shot straight to the back of the net and the Leopards rushed onto the field to celebrate their victory. Ranked 60th, Lafayette Shocked No. 7 Princeton fans.

I wasn’t too nervous when I had the stroke. I’ve already taken two this year and I knew I was going to go top left so I was just focused on getting the ball into the net. I think we had good possession and put a lot of pressure on them. We were just unable to finish in our attacking circle, Davidson wrote to the prince.

We were pretty confident going into the game, especially after two solid wins. We try not to underestimate our opponents, and I don’t think we did with Lafayette; we just lost our focus. But I think we all agreed that this was a turning point in our season, and we will grow from this game and use it as fuel for the rest of the season, she added.
