Vandy must leave SEC as Vols checker stadium
Throw academics out the window. If Tennessee Football manages to check Vanderbilt Stadium later this year, the Vanderbilt Commodores must be expelled from the SEC. Vol fans have had it on Twitter this week to do just that.

Yes, Nashville is full country. More UT fans will be in attendance when the Vols visit Vandy this year to close out the season. That’s humiliating enough, but it’s forgivable. However, if the Vols manage to pull off a gimmick difficult enough to perform in their home stadium, you can’t keep them in the league.
No other academic program at a conference would allow that. Do you think the USC Trojans could do something like that at the Stanford Cardinal? What about the Illinois Fighting Illini, Ohio State Buckeyes or Michigan Wolverines at the Northwestern Wildcats?
Just look in the ACC. When the Clemson Tigers visited the Wake Forest Demon Deacons and won in extra time last week, Wake Forest still had the vast majority of fans. There’s no excuse for Vanderbilt to let Vol fans do this.
Taking that into account, academics is an irrelevant excuse. It’s also an irrelevant reason. The SEC could add another academic school if Vanderbilt is kicked out, and many would be willing to join. Wake Forest and the Duke Blue Devils are among them.
On the other hand, there can be a credibility factor in evicting a charter member. That is fair. One of the hallmarks of big conferences like the SEC is that once you join, you join. However, you must keep part of the agreement if you participate.
A level of apathy that would allow Tennessee football fans to do such a thing at Vanderbilt’s home stadium is the ultimate in breaking the bargain. Yes, the standard would have to be extremely low to hold your way. Vandy would not meet that standard.
No, teams cannot be kicked out of a league for lack of revenue generated or lack of success, for the same reason you can’t get out of a coach buyout if you fire them for lack of performance. In that regard, Vandy should be safe.
However, allowing another team to perform such a gimmick on their home turf would be like firing a coach for good reason. At that point, the SEC would have an argument to kick them out of the competition.
For Vanderbilt’s sake, you’d almost hope Tennessee football doesn’t pull this off. Vol fans have humiliated people in the past, but this would be the worst shame ever uttered on a show. At that point, Vandy shouldn’t even be an FBS show.
