2022-23 Fantasy Hockey: Position fights to know, take out goalkeepers and more

The selection of training camps has flooded the trade lists in the NHL, but there are plenty of questions about the lineup that have yet to be answered before the start of the 2022-23 season. Let’s take a look at some of the key position fights still going on that fantasy managers should keep a close eye on before the puck drops on Opening Night.

goalkeepers

maple leaves: Matt Murray/Ilya Samsonov

Toronto’s revamped goaltending situation presents fantasy managers with an intriguing, high-risk, high-reward opportunity. Consistency has been an issue for Murray and Samsonov in recent years, but playing behind a Toronto squad that defends far better than any netminder’s previous team should prove beneficial in 2022-23. Of course, it also doesn’t hurt that the Leafs have some of the best fouls in the league, which will help both goalkeepers achieve wins even when they’re not at their best. Samsonov has attracted the most attention in fantasy concepts and seems like the safer bet. It wouldn’t come as a surprise, though, if Murray gets more looks early on, though his injury history is a major concern.

Avalanche: Alexander Georgievi/Pavel French

The goalkeeper situation in Colorado has also changed dramatically this off-season. Darcy Kuemper joined the Washington Capitals as a free agent, leaving his former backup Francouz to compete against newcomer Georgiev for game time in 2022-23. Georgiev, a former Ranger and understudy for Igor Shesterkin, is expected to have every opportunity to prove that he can be a No. 1 net less this season. The Avalanche have expressed great confidence in Georgiev and believe he can take the next step. He’s got a lot of imagination, but there’s also some doubt that Georgiev could be a team’s go-to option between the pipes. Francouz has done well as a backup before, but he’s also failed to make the jump to a full-time starter. Georgiev has gotten the most attention in fantasy concepts, but Francouz should make for a great insurance policy or a solid depth option this year. It wouldn’t be surprising to see this evolve into a full timeshare – both keepers could see the same use this year.

kings: Jonathan Snel/Cal Petersen

Los Angeles will go into the 2022-23 season with the same goalkeeper duo as in 2021-22, so there’s not nearly as much uncertainty about this situation as the other puck-stopping tandems on this list. Still, it’s a situation worth keeping an eye on, as the Kings recorded 44 wins last year and should be just as successful, if not better, this season. Quick made 46 starts in 2021-22 compared to Petersen’s 35 as the former was much more consistent. However, Petersen’s potential and Quick’s age should keep the competition going this season, and it wouldn’t be surprising if the two split the workload evenly. Fast remains the better option for fantasy managers going into the campaign, but Petersen offers great value as an in-depth option.

red wings: Alex Nedeljkovic/Ville Husso

The Detroit goalkeepers had a hard time this past campaign. Nedeljkovic recorded the vast majority of starts and did not perform particularly well outside of an impressive stretch in November. The Red Wings sought help in the off-season and eventually traded for Husso, who outperformed Jordan Binnington with the Blues last year. Husso was brought in to carry the burden with Nedeljkovic, but he has a good chance of clearing the Red Wings’ No. 1 job in 2022-23, just as he did with the Blues in 2021-22. Husso was favored by fantasy managers in this year’s drafts, but an improved Red Wings roster has also helped improve Nedeljkovic’s prospects.

Other battles to follow

Blue coats: primary care center

Columbus caused a furore this summer during free agency, signing Johnny Gaudreau to a $68.25 million seven-year contract. It was a move that shocked the hockey world and gave the Blue Jackets a major offensive offensive. Pairing a playmaker of Gaudreau’s caliber with a scoring sniper like Patrick Laine was an obvious match, but the choice of which center will play between them has proved much more difficult. Boone Jenner is expected to get the first crack in that role, but he will face competition from Cole Sillinger and Jack Roslovic. Maybe even Kent Johnson will see a turnaround in the top line at some point this season. Nevertheless, Jenner still makes the most sense. He is the captain of the team, he is an excellent defender and he was on pace for an excellent season last year before suffering a back injury. Whoever ends up starring in the middle of the top gets a significant fantasy boost.

Maple Leafs: Second Line

Toronto went into camp with an open wing next to it John Tavares and William Nylander on the second line. However, Tavares suffered an oblique injury during the preseason and is expected to be sidelined at the start of the year. Already a top contender for a second-line spot, Alexander Kerfoot became a virtual lock as soon as Tavares went down thanks to his ability to play at center or on the wing. Jason Robertson, Dennis Malgin and Jarnkrok Street have emerged as favorites for the other wing spot due to their impressive performances during the camp. Robertson may have the inside track, because of his scoring advantage. He could be worth taking a shot at deeper fantasy leagues if he can secure that role.

Hurricanes: second-line center

Carolina’s second-line center position remained vacant in the off-season when Vincent Trocheck signed with the New York Rangers as a free agent. The hurricanes added Paul Stastny in free agency this summer, but had expressed interest in using Jesperi Kotkaniemi in the second-line middle role before that signing. Stastny is much more proven than Kotkaniemi, but the Hurricanes can also turn to Jordan Steel. Steel could very well be the one to get the job, but Kotkaniemi can be expected to fill the role to kick off the campaign.

Avalanche: second-line center

Colorado was left with a void on the second line when… Nazem Kadri chose to sign with the Flames as a free agent this summer. Alex Newhook has emerged as the best candidate to fill that spot during training camp, so he has intriguing fantasy potential. However, he may face competition from JT Comperwho has already filled in the second line before. Mikko Rantanen has also shown that in the past he is more than capable of playing in the middle so he could pop up as another option along with newcomer Evan Rodrigues. The second line, which looks like it could be a mix of Newhook, Rodrigues and Valery Nichushkin based on training camp combinations, will probably be shuffled once Gabriel Landeskog is healthy enough to return from a lower body injury – he is scheduled to miss the start of the 2022-23 campaign.
