No. No. 9 men’s water polo welcomes No. 16 Fordham to the opening round of the NCAA tournament

PRINCETON The No. 9 men’s water polo team welcomes the No. 16 Fordham Rams to the DeNunzio Pool for the opening round of the NCAA tournament on Saturday (noon).

The winner will advance to the third opening round game against Southern California (18-6), with the winner advancing to the championship round to play UCLA (22-4) in California. In the second opening round, Pacific (21-6) will play against UC Davis (19-7), with the winner advancing to the championship and playing California (21-2).

Princeton and Fordham already met once this season at DeNunzio and provided a thriller in September.

The two teams traded goals and tied the game at 6-draw at half time. Even at eight, Fordham scored the last two goals of the third stanza. Pierce Maloney scored quickly on successive possessions to start the last eight minutes to tie the game for the eighth time. Luke Johnson put Princeton in front, but Fordham answered about 90 seconds later. Roko Pozaric secured the game winner with 1:17 remaining.

The two teams met in the 2021 NCAA Tournament, with Princeton earning a 17-8 at home, the program’s first NCAA win since 2011.
