Fort St. John minor hockey pioneer Michael Chambers mourned
A pioneer in the sports community of Fort St. John has died.
Long-term resident and minor hockey pioneer Michael Chambers died on June 30 at the age of 84.
Born in Harron Middlesex, England, Chambers emigrated to Victoria in 1951. He moved to Fort St. John in 1958 to work as a teacher and was involved in the school system until 1975.
In those 17 years, Chambers had a big hand in the beginning of school sports and minor hockey in the city.
“While teaching at Fort St. John … Mike played an important role in the early development of not only school sports, but also Fort St. John minor hockey,” family and friends said in his obituary.
“Mike had a positive impact on the lives of many young people in the Fort St. John area and will be long remembered for his contributions to the community as a whole.”
After seven years away, Chambers moved back to Fort St. John in 1983, where he worked for the BC Housing Commission.
Chambers was a fixture on the stands at the North Peace Arena, where he followed Fort St. John Huskies and Senior Flyers religiously. He was also a regular sight at City Hall, attending more council meetings than any other resident in the recent memory.
Old friend Bob Trobak remembers Chambers for his love of hockey and his independence.
“He loved hockey until the bitter end, he even survived the season,” said Trobak. “He was very independent, reluctant to admit defeat, and tried to do everything he could.”
There will be no formal services at his request.
